In a time where UK has a very high rate of employment, ie the present, and what with it's mega brilliant economy and all, maybe it could now be payback time too, and I feel the government couldn't be accused of taking advantage of the poor and unemployed so to speak. Here in Germany for many years now the alternative choice to doing compulsory military service (Which is slowly dying off in favour of purely professional army etc, as in UK) was a Civilian Service. So wether a conscienscous objector, or for other reasons there's no argument to avoid the (18 months -ish) National alternative. It is usually socially orientated, and I feel does a great deal of good for both parties, and if 'Correctly & Professionally' run by people from within their respective fields, rather than Central Office, can be of great benefit allround.
Pay is minimal, but more than dole, and is complimented with all the other bits too (health insurance, etc, that all take for granted). This would mean that 'ALL' male and females from the ages of 16 - 35 would at some point be required to do their service. NO uniforms, no bullshit, just real life work-experience, wether in a Hospice (older folk) hospital, yoof club, certain schools, all-sorts of things right across the board. No test at the end, no forcing people to do things other than getting them to realise the social aspect of it (not cheap labour either). Students in UK now forced to pay fees could earn credit reductions, as well as others who won't go so far can earn credits for other types of National Education & training (in every field under the sun). I wont compare here with there as there are big psychological differences I feel, as well as the German system being put under immense pressure right now because of internal political ranglings, but generally I feel it could work, innit.

Over the last few years since joining the internet club and both re-kindling contact with long lost school friends etc, as well as pottering about on renown forums such as this, It's become all to clear what a tool it really can be. One particular lady who I've had such re-kindled contact with (some 26 years) has told me 'roughly' about her own career (Educashun ) and it's development, and how she's made herself and her family lots of dosh to-boot, and jolly good luck to her, innit. Last wednesday at Prime Ministers questions I was suprised to hear the London Borough Of Redbrige's Education Dept mentioned in not very illuminating terms, and the PM was asked directly if he could intervene and investigate the seeming corruption and meg-missuse of funds that were missing in regards of individual childrens allocated spending budgets so to speak.
Given that this is a relatively 'rich' part of London, one really wonders what motivates such greed ? and as my afore-mentioned friend actually works for them in Redbridge (Senior Post)(I've had no contact with her for some 6 months mow) I hope she'll maybe at some point explain to me what's going on, and defend their argument, as it's unlikely I'm going to ask her directly for fear of being myself accused of something wicked, innit ?

I must admit I've just watched American Politicians live in their house debating over the points of a woman's life (wether her feeding tube be removed or not)and all of the arguments for and agains't, and it was brilliant in it's sincerity and whatever; plus the conclusion most Democratic³ as it was , and still it maybe most likely wrong ? still possibly the "Who Can Tell ?".

Deane,
By the 'who can tell?' comment I meant that, if there's any doubt, we shouldn't be killing this woman. She's brain damaged not brain dead.
By the 'husband' comment I meant that from all I've read of this man, with his new lover and kids, etc., etc., I don't like him and I don't trust him.
There are many who wish to pin this on crazy, extreme right wing, fundamentalist Christians. I don't see it that way.

WHO DOES WHAT
A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee
each morning. The wife said, "You should do it, because you
get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee."
The husband said, "You are in charge of cooking around here and you
should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee."
Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that
the man should do the coffee." Husband replies, "I can't believe that, show
me." So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him
at the top of several pages, that it indeed says........."HEBREWS"

Cheers. I seem to remember seeing a Horizon documentary quite a few years ago about a doctor researching persistent vegetative states - the upshot being that he revised his view of "vegetative".
My wife has a friend whose own wife has been in such a state for many years due to the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. (Apparently some forms of MS take the mind as well as the body). She was diagnosed more than 25 years ago and has been in a nearly vegetative state for at least the last fifteen years (to my knowledge). He has had relationships in this time but has never sought the divorce he could have easily sought under the circumstances. A few years ago she contracted a respiratory complaint of some kind and he was asked if he wanted her resuscitated or not if her breathing arrested etc. He said that he couldn't bring himself to make that decision for her - even though he is in a stable relationship with another woman now and they have bought property together.
The whole area is a tough one though. There's nothing like seeing somebody die of cancer to shake moral certainty about thing - or at least that has been my experience. I just don't know anymore. I don't like the medical "war against death" but neither do I want to die a bad death.

Deane,
You're absolutely right, it's a very tough area. One aspect that I find upsetting is when advocates of one side call the other side 'evil' (or similar). The same is true of the abortion 'debate'.
I've got a couple of friends with MS and I've watched them deteriorate over the years. I can imagine that soon the impaired motor function will prevent talking and finally will, no doubt cause brain damage. How awful. Perhaps something can be done one day with stem cell research or similar.
We all die and it's rarely pretty. It seems so much worse when the person is young.
A man asked a Zen Master for his definition of 'happiness'. He said: "Grandfather dies, father dies, son dies."

I had a quiet chat with a friend, 13, who eventually died of cancer. It took 8 months from diagnosis to death and he felt that, if someone had told him what his extended time would be like, he'd rather have avoided it.

The problem with terminal cancer is that you often don't reach that vegetative state before death.
You die in agony.
The doctors hold off the morphine for as long as is possible because you build up a resistance to it - as well as a dependence if they put you on it too soon.
In the last dying days you scream with agony, and the doctors can't relieve your pain with an extra dose because the pain threshold is greater than that of you staying alive.
I say so be it, administer the requisite dosage that will kill the pain even if it will certainly kill the patient.
Religious wankers say no.
The law says no.
1 in 5 of us will die of cancer.
Maybe 1 in not-many-more-than 5 die in agony because of religiously-based wankery about the terribly misplaced fundamentals and so-perceived value of life.
A family friend here has recently died of prostate cancer. He'd had it for years.
The weekend before last, everyone was hoping for his own sake that he wouldn't make Sunday once the excruciating pains began. Even with the the max doses of morphine the doc could administer without himself risking possibly 14 years in jail for unlawful killing were insufficient to stop pain that was probably the equivalent of being broken on the wheel or crucifiction.
It's time the law was changed to permit lethal doses of morphine when death is so imminent and yet so very painful.
He eventually passed away on the Tuesday, and, apparently it was quite peaceful (in the end.)
Amen to that.
If it was your pet, you'd have no compunction whasoever with putting it out of its misery at the local vet.
The way we should treat animals should serve as as a reference to how we treat ourselves.
Let your conscience be your ultimate guide and fuck instititutional religion

What with recent 'High Profile' UK cases of innocent people finally being released and 'Supposedly' pardoned even at Royal & PM level, plus the many not so high profile cases that happen regularly, I am still dumfounded at the State's arrogance and 'Cheek²' to charge these folk for their prison time (deducted from compensation they may recieve). In the States of course (as I've previously mentioned) innocents can get up to $10 dollars a day, though in many States absolutely ZILCH, (NO wonder then there are many pissed off people about, eh ?).

Can one assume that in the present long running U.S. 'Life or Death' case discussed in at least two threads on this forum alone, that the highly paid lawyers and judges have wavered their normal extortionate fees for the case of humanity ? I think not somehow, so wonder who in fact is actually financing this historic legal wrangle ?

Mr Madeitallup T'fillaspace of no fixed abode, and drawling in an Australian accent explained to police in London yesterday that the thousands of teenage ponographic images found in his baggage, and on his mates laptop (That he was looking after for him) were all quite legal, and that the majority of British people brought them every day from licensed newsagents. Page three of the Sun, (or the old currant bun as it's known daan Saaf) is an instiitution in itself to compliment the wide and varied coverage of topical world affairs to-boot found within its hallowed sheets. Naturally in some third world countries and California, such images would be classed as heavy porn, and to be caught owning such filth could land you with 35 years - life, or even being forced to write speeches for its Guvner. Mr A. Thingy ? to help him and his mates in the next round of money laundering (sorry fund raising ) for ever and ever, innit.

A nice evening with baked fish & mexican veggies plus garlic (lot's) and a knob of Irish butter, and all washed down with a cheeky very dry Champagne, whils't watching the Avengers for the first time with Mr Fiennes etc. The BBC's biggest ever money spinner of all time is the Tellytubbies, and I wonder sometimes if that wouldn't be more appropiate for most box watchers this evening than a pathetic attempt at hitting better ratings by re-showing classic Dr Who episodes, innit ?

I watched an interesting Israeli/US film last night from 2001 called "The Body", I wonder if anybody has seen it ? Very topically relates to a grave found in Jerusalem that supposedly contained Christ's remains, and if true would naturally put Christendom out of the faith/belief business that its so vigorously created over the Century's, innit.

Having just finished perusing my local supermarket for this and that, a few thoughts came to me, as they do ! Barring the difference between kilo of Italian Pears at €1,99 and a Kilo of Cape SA Pears at €0,99, which smelt and looked exactly the same, though an obvious profit margin difference of 100%, I wondered why some smart arse Yank Lawyer hasn't yet blamed TV for makin people fat, booze, for crashing cars and destroying thousands of lives, or whatever, else comes to moind, cos I forgot, innit.
