GETTING IN OVER MY HEAD - BRIAN WILSON
He’s been called the most influential songwriter of the past century with good reason. Over the course of his career, creative genius Brian Wilson has penned and produced some of the greatest pop rock songs of all time. Today the man who put the Beach Boys into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is thriving once again, making music that’s both timely and timeless. On June 22, Wilson will add another chapter to his incredible story with the release of GETTIN’ IN OVER MY HEAD, his first new studio album since 1998’s critically acclaimed Imagination. Written and produced by Wilson, GETTIN’ IN OVER MY HEAD features guest appearances by Eric Clapton,Elton John, and Paul McCartney. The highly anticipated album also includes the harmony-laden “Soul Searchin,’ ” featuring Carl Wilson—Brian took Carl’s lead vocal from an earlier session and recorded a new backing track with his band. He then sang the bridge and all the background harmonies himself, resulting in a heartfelt duet with his late brother. “Soul Searchin’ ” is just one of several songs on the album written earlier but never completed until now. The title track and “Desert Drive’ offer fans their first chance to hear the fruits of a mid-’90s collaboration between Wilson and producer Andy Paley.

Can't wait. Smile in September is going to make autumn that bit more palatable. I'll be very disappointed though if he's not planning something live from the current tour. These concerts are just too good not to be made available to the general public. Hopefully he's waiting until it's all finished and then going to release a complete set as a double CD and perhaps a DVD.

Chris,
Many thanks for the news, looking forward to the September release. Did you see any of the Smile concerts last year, or booked any of summers schedule? I'm looking forward to hearing the New Stuff + Smile in July at RFH.

Denis,
You've got a treat in store, especially if you haven't seen him in concert before. I've seen him three times since 2002 and they're probably the three best concerts I've ever been to. His band is capable of playing stuff on stage you wouldn't believe was possible. Smile in concert is out of this world although frankly overall I preferred the Pet Sounds concerts.

Yes, I went to Bristol, and have tickets for Oxford. I was right at the back of the Colston Hall and though the sound was good it would have been more involving nearer the front. Of course the music was incredible.

I certainly hope that "Getting In Over My Head" is better than "Imagination", as that one was utterly bombastic tripe. It was good for a laugh though; I just listened to it again the other day.

Mike,
I think Brian's Head might have cleared now he's got over his 'Trip'

Tom,
'Smile' & 'GIOMH' news can be seen on Brian's Web site
HereTwo of my Hero's that have released a DVD & Double CD are Pete Townshend (Lifehouse Concert) and Love with Arthur Lee (Forever Changes RFH Concert). I'm only missing Pete's CD from my collection at moment.
Arthur's DVD is good on my Standard TV (sound not great, as expected), but the CD is the best 'live' recording I own. From 'Alone again Or' to 'You set the Scene', the emotional atomosphere created is like no other I have heard. It's also a beautifully presented Gatefold CD with an added HDCD production as a bonus. There are no HDCD Logo's anywhere, but the LED came on the CDX2 at Grahams Hi-Fi the other week. If Brian can make me gush like this, then as you say I'm in for a treat.

Denis,
I'm a regular visitor and occasional contributor to Brian's web site message board. It's got too smarmy and much less interesting for me now compared to a couple of years ago.
I've got Forever Changes live and while I agree it's a beautiful performance and recording I've never managed to get fully into that album. Whenever I listen to it I think "that's pretty good, but what's all the fuss really about?". Much the same as some folk feel about Pet Sounds, which seems to me even more breathtaking every time I hear it. Each to his own as they say.
Enjoy the concert. The first Glasgow gig, in January 2002, was, for me, a life-changing experience. It was a real spiritual event and I say this knowing how daft that sounds. I literally listened to nothing but Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys for about 6 months afterwards.
Sadly he's not coming up to Scotland on this leg of the tour which was quite a surprise as he got a fantastic response in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply; when my kit returns from it's rub down with the Salisbury Evening Echo I will put my Pet Sounds LP on repeat. I seem to remember it sounding a bit lightweight though. Were you commenting on the Pet Sounds Live CD?
As London is too far away, maybe the Hague Concert is closer

Denis,
I much prefer the studio version. Frankly I was very disappointed that there wasn't a big live package released from the Pet Sounds tour and don't really listen to the live CD very much. The DVD is much better IMO, being taken from the January and June dates, and with a much more relaxed mix.
