1. 145mph
2. near Southport
3. BMW 7 Series
4. Nope, but I wasn't driving.

Most dangerous was 120mph on the back of a GSX-R1100, between two lanes of traffic on double white lines. The fastest feeling was riding a fully rigid GT Karakoram down Devils Dyke with no helmet on.

A superb speed section is where the M11 (heading north) merges into the A1, the 8 lane section, its awesome and is slightly declined, you can see the mustard miles away Cool

1. "Approaching" mach 1*.
2. Somewhere over Europe.
3. Boeing 747
4. N/A - I don't think they have speed cameras at 30,000 ft...

* Well, the pilot announced that because of a very strong tail wind he was throttling back (or whatever the right expression is) so as not to get too close to mach 1. The speed he announced was rather fast for a 747 but nowhere near mach 1.

I turned off into Epping forest the GSXR followed, and i raced behind him through the forest (not really overtaking roads), but i overtook some old vectra to catch upto him, the GSXR realised i was probably going to knock him down and pulled over, and let me pass Big Grin
I do hope you made that up because the thought that it might be true - and that you appear to think it's a laughing matter - is unbearable.

Jeremy, unless you were at the controls it doesn't count.

1 100mph
2 Nottingham Ring Road (Where they now have the first of many speed cameras.)
3 Kawasaki Z1
4 They could never catch me.

Disclaimer - It was along time ago.

I have gone quite a bit faster in a Cessna (about 150 knots in a steep dive) and I was at the controls.

About 170mph at Aintree in some sort of racing car on one of those days out from the office that the blokes who read Top Gear magazine organise and then get all shirty when they aren't as good at driving fast as the anti-car liberal and the woman from accounts.

I've done something like 130mph on the back of a GSX750R on the M56 just outside Runcorn wearing a suit after everyone who could give me a lift home in a car went home when I wasn't looking.

1)135mph (in 4th)
2)Joining a deserted M4 @ J18 towards London early one Sept.morning - going to the Brighton Speed Trials Big Grin
3)Saab 900turbo
4)No

Exploratory poke with new toy. Hit the revlimiter rather quickly, haven't since pursued the matter any further...

Most hair-raising was achieving 100mph in a 1973 Beetle (with, er, a PSU upgrade). Not much fun at all, actually....

LOL! So true. My colleagues seems to be forever taking part in competitive mass-gokarting incidents. The fastest laps are always returned by our secretarial staff and hangers-on. Cue serious faces and endlessly-technical mitigating-circumstance stories come Monday morning...

OK, here's mine - check this out:-

1) 50mph
2) North Circular Road going past the Lea Valley trading estate near Walthamstow
3) Peugeot 205GRD
4) Yup - stopped by the police who claimed it was a 30mph zone (it's a 3-lane dual carriageway!)

Outcome:- they let me off.

Beats everyone for the most boring one of the lot!! Big Grin

4) No.

Steve.

"Anti-car" and "liberal" do not belong in the same sentence. Cars epitomise liberty.

I know let's ask

1. How much friends / relatives have been injured /killed by speeding motorists ?
2. How long they were in hospital for ?
3. Cost to the country of the lost contribution of those people?

That'll be a laugh won't it!

Posted on: 09 May 2004 by BigH47
Well said DS.
Tom are you saying "slow speed" is dangerous? Roll Eyes
Fastest I have been driven is 170 at Daytona in a 2 seat NASCAR.
IMO the only place high speeds should be seen is the race track or Germany (max 155).
Posted on: 09 May 2004 by Geoff P
1) 220Kph
2) Autobahn nr Stuttgart
3) Nearly new Volkswagen VR1Turbo AVIS rental
4) Nope, cause it was legal in those days

Reason: Trying to keep up with all the mad Germans doing the same speed.
