Sad news, Emlyn Hughes has passed away today. He was a truely great character.

My sympathies to his family.

He seemed to me a genuinely warm man with an enormous appetite for life.

He was also no mean footballer.

I'd like to reiterate NB's sympathies to his family.

I used to quite like Emlyn (which as a United fan is saying something), though I get the impression that he had a quite a few enemies in the game.

Whilst I comiserate with those who have lost someone and I acknowledge the footballer and that amazing smile, I do feel there's a bit of revisionism going on here. Crazy Horse was not well liked in many quarters and with good reason by all accounts.

It's always sad to hear of such a loss but let's also keep some perspective.

On Saturday sadly. He's had cancer for a while. I'm not joking when I say he was one of my heroes. Met him as a child in the 70's at a Traction Engine Rally and have always had a fascination for the sorts of things he used to present on TV. A real champion of the industrial age in particular and with infectious enthusiasm.

Again, he will be sadly missed by many.

Patrick,

My tendency would be to agree with you but, equally, if you haven't got anything honest to say about someone who has sadly passed away then don't say that either.

The man was a defender who couldn't but who gained praise for his attacking sorties; a leader of men who often despised him and said so to his face (witness some of their biographies) and hideously unpopular with plenty outside of football who found him arrogant, rude and downright unpleasant. Most of those same people are now queuing up in sycophantic, hypocritical praise of the man and it is that I object to rather than the man himself.
