Hicap--a la nouvelle

Posted by: Richard Paget on 06 December 2000

Hi,
MMMM currently lookin' 'round for a s/h hicap
I've heard that the post 94'ish models with the newer silver wrapped transformer have sharper transients and give less additional warmth to the sound--i.e better than the older black wrapped one (different manufacturer)even with when recapped.

Anyone had any experiences in this regard?

Does this effect the 250 in a similar way?
as am on the look out too!!

Would be most appreciative of any wisdom

Thanks
Richard

Richard,

I own 3 Hicaps, 2 old & 1 new. You are right the new style does sound a little different even after recapping all 3.

The new style is sharper, more low level detail & just a little less flow, though very groovy.

Old style a bit softer, slightly less information with a bit more smudging, slightly warmer sounding.

Old or new they are excellent. The differences are there but in real terms quite subtle.

I think my favourite is the new style/sound, but only just.

Bob.

Thanks Bob,
With your advice I've splashed out the xtra £50 and found a mid'98 hicap for £450
I'll guess I'll save on any recap costs for several years.
Thank you
Cheers Richard
