Happy 70th birthday Elvis
Posted by: Kevin-W on 08 January 2005
I've just celebrated the great man's birthday by playing what is probably his finest studio LP, the transcendant From Elvis In Memphis.
For those who don't know, it contains some titanic vocal performances - Gentle On My Mind, In The Ghetto, Only The Strong Survive et al - backed up by jaw-droppingly good musivcianship.
Anyone else been thinking about The King today?

Hello Kevin,
Always thinking about the 'King' and playing his albums.
Have you any of his work released on the 'Follow That Dream' label? - excellent sound quality and a chance to hear alternate takes etc.
Regards...George.

I recently got a pretty cool Elvis comp...from Starbucks! It's entitled Boy From Tupelo, and contains a hip selection of his 50's sides like "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone", "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Money Honey" etc. An Elvis completist will already have all this, but many have not yet pledged their fealty to the King and this compilation is a nice intro/reminder of how great he and his band were. My new Naim kit really lights it up too.

Hi George
The only one I've got so far is the 1969
Memphis Sessions disc, which is excellent. Any others you recommend?
regards
Kevin

I heard an interesting bit on the radio last night to the effect that the European copyrights on Elvis's earliest stuff are expiring, and the rest of rock and roll will inexorably follow, one year's worth at a time. The American labels are going nuts.
I have The Sun Sessions and The '56 Sessions on vinyl. I don't pull them out often, but they're a lot of fun when I do.
