POP3 Login Delay With New ADSL Modem+Router+Hub

Posted by: Mike Hanson on 24 August 2004

Sorry for the extremely technical message, but there are a bunch of guys hanging around here that are smarter than I am (at least with some things Wink).

I've recently upgraded to an all-in-one ADSL modem+router+hub. I formerly used a separate ADSL modem, with a router+hub connected to that. The new device performs all functions as expected, with one glaring annoyance. When my POP3 clients (Outlook, Outlook Express, MailWasher, etc.) attempt to login to my external mail server (i.e. not my own ISP's), there is a consistent 30 second delay before the logon is complete. After the initial delay it's as fast as normal.

I've tried changing back to the old hardware combo, and it works without the delay.

My googling has turned up only references to reverse DNS lookups from the POP3 server. Others have complained of a similar, consistent delay (although the actual period varies from person to person).

I'm wondering whether this new device, which is supposedly more secure than my old combo, is too stealthy, and the POP3 has to wait for various time-outs.

Of course, my ISP (who also supplied the new modem) is of no help. The fact that I'm accessing an external POP3 server starts them into the typical finger-pointing game.

Has anyone else encountered problems like these, and do you have any suggestions?

I'd say it IS a DNS problem but :

What do ping statistics look like for your ISP's vs your pop3 server ? Try both by name and IP address.

I would also try :

telnet yourpop3server 110

See how long it takes for the initial prompt to come up. If it's quick, test actual login by typing :

user userid

wait for reply

pass password

This will tell you if the delay is at connection or the login.
