Micro$oft Outlook Problem
Posted by: Hammerhead on 05 July 2004
My Outlook e-mailer-mejig has gone mad all of a sudden and I was wondering if anyone can suggest a cure...
If I try and delete an old e-mail, I get an error box with the following message : 'The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook'. Done that, no difference. Shut down the computer, unplugged it for 5 mins, restarted and the same error occurs.
Also, I can see e-mails are coming in, but they're not showing up in my inbox. Strangly, a file I've sent to a client is still showing up in my outbox even though its gone already!
Does anyone have a clue to what's wrong with it/how to fix it?
Many thanks in advance!
Steve

Have you tried the repair feature on your office cd?

You should perhaps try the Inbox Repair Tool. The .pst file that Outlook creates is very large, encrypted and frequently overwritten, so it's no surprise it gets corrupted occasionally. On the two occasions that this has happened to me, the repair tool has sorted it out pretty well, although some older email has been lost.
The repair tool, called scanpst.exe is installed with Outlook, but doesn't appear in Programs, or get mentioned on any Outlook menu, so you have to scan your machine for it to find where it's lurking using Find or Search.
The .pst file is a hidden file, so you'll need to find that by scanning too, after you've turned 'view hidden files' on in the Folder Options menu [which is in Tools in any regular window]. Again use Find/Search and type in *.pst [* being the wildcard symbol - it will find all .pst folders on your system].
If you Google on Inbox Repair Tool, you'll find plenty of pages with step by step instructions.
Too late now, I know, but it's a good idea to archive stuff you want to keep but don't need every day. It makes Outlook start faster, too!

Might as well be for a code monkey that I am!
I ran an auto-archive this morning and that seemed to sort it out. It must have been well over-due as it took a good hour and a half to complete
Thanks for all the replies,
Steve

Hi Steve
I tried to use 'Outlook' with my whizzo new PC a few months back and had all sorts of trouble with the outbox and sending messages that I had composed off-line.
In desperation; I reverted to the much simpler 'Outlook Express' which works just fine.
I prefer it.
