Anybody else feel they're the kiss of death to a thread?
Posted by: TomK on 01 October 2004
It seems to me that a few lively threads have ended with my contribution. Anybody else feel this way? (He says expecting no answer).
I confess I'm paranoid because the same thing used to happen as a teenager when I hung about in a crowd including the gorgeous girl who's now my wife and my contribution to the conversation would result in "Is that right?" followed by silence. Next topic please.

You're just a deep thinker TomK. You take each enquiry seriously and, like Socrates, plumb the depths of the complexities hidden within the topic because you just can't take it that something doesn't quite (just doesn't quite) make sense.
Or else you are a slow thinker, dragging behind the crowd, until it suddenly occurs "Oh yeah". But everybody has moved on.
Or else you are paranoid, thinking that the other forum contributors are the "in" group and you form the "out" group.
But I do know what you mean. I've seen the same thing happen to a few of my postings as they gradually drop down the page with my name in the "last post" section. I'm just uncool.
I'm sure that you've lured me into a trap here. This will be the last posting on this topic, I'm sure.
Dare to reply, TomK?
Deane

It is perhaps better to have the last word on a given thread than for the thread to continue without your particular query being answered.
Internet forums don't really reflect real life because you don't always know who is reading at any given time.
In real life you can always see who may be listening to what you have to say.
I often seem to be the last person to post on a given thread, but rarely do I start a thread that goes unanswered.
THe fact that the gorgeous girl is now your wife explains all - and kinda proves my point about having the last word...
Regards,
Steve.

Dean F,
FWIW, you are new around here but I find myself enjoying reading your posts.

I'll often bring a thread to a complete halt by pontificating about History, Literature, my childhood in India or something; I don't take it too personally, I just take the hint that I (and I'm only talking about myself here) can be a pompous, boring git. See, for example, how the "Bose is in on the game" thread just sort of avoided my post.
Hey, did I tell you about what Kipling said about politicians at parties <snore>.....

Tom,
By acting to kill-off some of the threads on here (and in other places!) I believe one is providing an important social service. Many of them go on for far too long, eventually meandering so far off-topic that they become largely irrelevant.
Others degenerate into tedious pissing contests between arrogant pompous know-alls who cannot accept that views other than their own might have any validity. I say keep up the good work - the forum needs people like you

David is right. Somebody should start a conversation thread.
"Irony" would be an excellent topic.
TomK could have the last word.

Let's see whose contribution ends this thread.
Hmmm, if we had a prize for the final poster this could go on forever.

'Anybody else feel they're the kiss of death to a thread?'
Yup.
Certainly in the early days of my Forum membership it felt like that.
But like Steven Toy says this is a bulletin board where you don't know who's online reading your postings at any given time, so I resist making it mean anything.
Perhaps I will yet claim the prize here though

.............and the irony is that nobody should have replied to the original posting.

I think it's right that there are indeed times when you've got to just say "Enough, everything's been said, there's no need for this to go on".
I guess that's sort of what many of you have been saying. I think that Tom's quotation from Adam expressed this point nicely.
By the way, if Tom's post had been the last, would Tom received credit for killing the thread, or would Adam?
Comments anyone?

If one of Fritz's post is on a screen and nobody is there to read it ...does it make sense?

.......... and this thread is resurrected as something completely different......

Is Kill Bill the worst film ever - whoops, I'll get my coat.

And here was me thinking that Adam's reply would have been :
"Me - we need to preserve the bandwidth. Thread locked"

Oldie
A fine attempt to put the kiss of death on this thread. However, I was dumb enough to post a reply.

I feel duty bound to report that my favourite breakfast is US style bacon (crispy), eggs (over-easy) and hash browns (sadly without hash). Delicious.
Has anyone seen the new Honda diesel engine advert? If not, it looks like this must be the end of this thread.
