new forum is awful

Posted by: rp on 17 August 2000

As a junior member it might not be my place to comment, but though I've never posted I've been reading this forum for 3 years now.

- The new forum is terrible. I can't make heads or tales out of it and I'm no web dummy. If I had the patience to figure it out maybe I would find it wonderful. But this is just a cyber version of a cork board, a thumb tack and a pen and paper, it shouldn't be anymore complicated than that. Remember - computers are here to make our lives easier...

- How long will I remain a junior member? How many merit badges must I earn before I graduate to eagle scout? When do I get a key to the VIP lounge?

- "You're nobody with out a Naim"? It's a little harsh, but what the hell, I guess I agree. It's time we flatearthers made our stand.

I beg to differ. I think its fine and have no difficulty using it at all. In fact I like it better than the old forum which I thought was pretty good too. (I did use the old one too, plus post there as well ). Perhaps I'm just too easy to please. Nothing is perfect and I'm sure the forum will undergo improvements in time.

I'm not sure what the junior member/member status is all about either. Its amusing that some people are posting just to change status, though.

What's more amusing is that it works...

Member status has very little meaning since you only need to post 5 times to become one...

Yes but but being a full member feels so good!

I think that the new format is better than the old. I certainly find it easier to read all new messages in 'threads'. In time I'm sure that the ability to attach images etc. will also be useful.

You can already attach images. However I am not clear about the board's policy on the size of image.

It would probably be more considerate to just give the URL.

Hey, Paul...

How many times do we have to post to become an 'Administrator'? ;-)

Ok, it's not really *awful* just too busy (aesthetically, that is). Too may buttons, icons and silly stuff on the screen. If you use it often enough you'll figure it out, but this is true of all sorts of odd stuff, including my broken down car. The site's not really intuitive. What's intuitive is hard to figure out since people are all different which is why it's best to avoid all the bells and whistles and keep such sites simple - IMHO. I remember when Dejanews was actually usable - a long time ago, in it's simplest form. With every *improvement* it became more and more unusable. I completely stopped using it over 2 years ago. I checked it out recently and it's hard to believe it was designed by humans.

I like the look and feel of the new forum, but I have a couple of questions and quibbles.
First, is it really slower than the old one? It seems so to me. Getting onto the main Hi-Fi forum can be laborious.
Secondly, is there any provision for having new posts in a given thread e-mailed automatically? I liked this feature of the old forum because I could keep up with a subject without signing on.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
