Old 140 and old HIcap

Posted by: alexandre Taithe on 13 October 2000

Hello, I have the possibility to buy in secondhand an Nap 140 (1988, old look) and an HIcap (1988, old look), for £290 each. It is not an audio shop which sells this material, but my naim dealer agrees to recapped those (?) for about £100 each if the material needs to.

My question is : are there some differences between old and new version (new look), especially performances?

I have to take a decision quickly

Thank for your help (and please always excuse my english

Alexandre

The 140 changed its output transistors at around the time the new look case came out, I have no idea how much the sound was improved. I used to own a similar 140 to the one you are considering - its a great amp. As far as I am aware the Hicap is pretty much unchanged since its introduction in 1984.

If your dealer is offering re-capping, ensure it is done by either Naim, or at least authorised by them, as the components are carefully selected.

Tony.
