Nac 102 noise

Posted by: Bernard Paquet on 27 November 2000

I just bought a Nac 102 with Napsc (i already have a hicap) and nap 180. Both are two years old. When i use the remote to raise the volume or change the balance i ear some noise in my speaker (sound like 'pouf'). Is it normal? I don't think so. Any comment?

Other than some 'white noise' when idle I get no unusual sounds from my 102/180/napsc setup.

Bernard,

I used to get a faint thuding sound from my 102 when quickly tapping the volume control, this went away completly when I got a NAPSC. Your situation with a NAPSC and hicap sounds odd.

You may find this noise will go with repeated cycling - wind the control from end-end a few times and see if this helps.

The only other possibility is a DC level on the pot being passed through to the subsequent amplifier stages (due to a leaky coupling capacitor?).

If the first tip above doesn't help, go back to your dealer / return to Naim for assistance.

Andy.

Hi Bernard,

This happens on mine also. It's a kind of "Chuff, chuff, chuff" sound. My question to you is what speakers are you using ?

I did not hear this sound until I bought my Kelly KT3's. They are much more sensitive(95db) than my old Missions(89db) and this seems to be why I hear the noise. It only happens when you change the volume from the remote so I assume it's interference from the motor.

The noise i ear is exactly what you describe Darren. My speaker are meadowlark kestrel, and they are not specialy efficace.

I try last evening the trick that Andrew recomend but nothing change.

Maybe it's a question of setup. Or a bad ground. I don't have naim cd player nor a turntable so i'm not sure the kit is perfectly grounded.

I finally find it. It was a faulty snaic. I just bought two new style hicap (one to replace my old cosmetic one and one for my cd3.5). So i decide to use the snaic that come with them and the noise went away. To be sure i replace the new snaic with previous one and the noise comes back.

Enfin, un probleme de moins.

Nah, the white noise is down to speaker sensitivity. The more sensitive the speaker, the more white noise you get.

My SBL's are 88db, which isnt massively sensitive, but if you have a speaker in the low 90's you'll certainly get some hiss.

I get some white noise on my speakers (BW N804) which are not especially sensitive, I think this could in part be to main noise, my system is on a ring with lots of other stuuf on it (no choice), but the system is in my bedroom and the noise is much too quiet to keep me awake. So normal.

Haven't noticed any noise when changing volume (except the ones that you expect) on my NAP102 with no NAPSC (next move I suspect).
