Madeleine Peyroux

I've just come across this artist. Amazon's samples certainly do strike me as very Billie Holiday -- not a bad thing IMO. And FWIW 'Careless Love' is October Stereophile's recording of the month. She'll be playing in CO early next year, so if any Seattle members catch her show on Friday, I'd be very interested to hearing how it went.

cheers,

I read the review in Stereophile. Apparently she got quite upset when the critic interviewed her and suggested she had a very Billie Holiday like delivery and sound. He thought he had given her a compliment, she felt that an insult. Whatever the truth she apparently has a unique and very creative singing skill.

I will have to see if the CD is out in Europe yet.

I have "Dreamland", and have to say she does do a credible Billie Holiday, as well as a fab Patsy Cline and a stunning Edith Piaf. She certainly adds her own flavor, but the influences aren't hidden or particularly subtle.

Still, I love the album, and I'll buy the new one when I run across it. She has an undeniably great voice. Recommended.

I have 'Dreamland', true one can think of Billie whilst listening, but I don't think that Madeline is so, err, painful in the sense that Billie had a life of pain and it shows. I got this disc as a cut out for $2 from www.secondspin.com. It was Robert Reina of Stereophile that piqued my curiosity. Don't think I'll be so lucky with the new one Winker
