Hunting Tigers Out In "Indiah"

With big hungry tigers
Table manners have no place
(Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear, oh, dear, no!)

After they have eaten you
They never say their grace
(Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear, oh, dear, no!)

Hunting tigers can be ripping fun
Like three blind mice
See the hunters run

Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India
Yah!

You all know how beastly tigers are
Out in out in
Out in India

They bite, they scratch
They make an awful fuss
It's no use stroking them
And saying, "Puss puss puss!"

Oh,
Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India
Yah!

They bite, they scratch
They make an awful fuss
It's no use stroking them
And saying, "Puss puss puss!"

Oh,
Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India
Yah!

I say J.O. it's jolly frightening out here...

Nonsense, dear boy, you should be like me!

But look at you, you're shaking all over! What's the matter with you?

Shaking, you silly goose? I'm just doing the Watusi, that's all...

Tigers don't go out on rainy nights
They've no need to
Whet their appetites

Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India

How many tigers can you find
With forks and serviettes?
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear, oh, dear, no!)

Don't care in what part of you
They fix their fretwork sets
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear dear, no
Dear dear, oh, dear, no!)

Hunting tigers can be ripping fun
Like three blind mice
See the hunters run

Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India
Yah!

Hunting tigers out in India
Out in out in
Out in India
YAH!

Happy student beer bar memories.

MY KIPLINGESQUE CHILDHOOD

Some here may believe me (thousands woudn't), but when I was but a wee lad living in Lahore, West Pakistan not long after the end of the Raj, my family visited India numerous times on holiday. One time, we were guests of a minor Raja in Uttar Pradesh who had met my father via his business somehow. We stayed in a guest bungalow on his estate for a couple of days; one day, we were taken on an honest-to-God, elephant-borne tiger hunt!!! We set off early in the a.m. with a full retinue of guides, bearers, beaters, mahouts and the jolly prince himself (I don't recall his name or what small state his family used to rule). After about an hours' ride on cushioned platforms with parisols, atop three elephants into the nearby hills, we stopped for tea & breakfast, all laid on with portable tables and kit in a clearing! Then on into the maturing daylight...after a while, a guide stopped the caravan, with news of a tiger! Excitedly, the raja and his seconds readied their guns. My mother, who had doubts about this part of the enterprise, blurted objections to the whole idea of murdering this beautiful animal. Our host then abashedly extemporised that the guns were 'just for show' and part of the tradition. Anyway, after a while a rather sleepy tiger was persuaded to run along the path for a brief moment, not even enough time for a photo. As I recall, the safari continued on to a viewpoint where there was a good view of the higher mountains, then back to the palace for tea & cakes.

Didn't seem like such a big deal at the time (I was eight years old), but this now is one of my cherished memories.

So the tiger didn't eat you then?

Regards,

Steve.

Well, the "tiger" eats us all in the end, doesn't he? Wink
