I disconnected my Hicap and connected my 180
to the 4 Pin input on my 102 (covering the 5 pin with the cap) - the sound
is like an AM radio - something is really wrong. What could be the problem?
I checked all the connections and tried to play a record - it still sounded
like am radio. Could I have damaged something?
Please help !

You obviously had a 102/hicap/180 and are reconnecting it for just 102/180 operation. In a 102/180 scenario, all you need is a 4-pin snaic, but you MUST have the 5-pin plug plugged into the 102. (James is wrong in this respect.)
What do you mean "covering the 5 pin with the cap"? I hope it means that you're using the 5-pin plug so you get the power from the 4-pin socket. Otherwise you'd get nothing (not even AM radio). The 5-pin plug (basically 5 pins with no interconnect) is supplied with the preamp, but you haven't been using it since you've been using the hicap and it may be in the preamp's box.
It's VERY unlikely that you damaged the amp.

Frank.

Thank you both for your help. Just to clarify, I was connecting the 102 and the 180 with a 4 pin snaic and a "shorting plug" in the 102's 5 pin plug. The plug is a small plastic piece with four prongs on it which fits into the 5 pin plug on the 102. I think it was connected correctly.
Anyway, I have shipped the stuff to Chicago for evaluation. I'll keep you both updated.
