Recumbents ?

Posted by: Brian OReilly on 25 June 2004

Have any of you cycle sluts ever ridden a recumbent ?

I see quite a few around here from time to time, some touring types, some with nose cone fairings and one last night with a carbon fibre frame. The use of c/f allowed the shape of the frame to locate the rider even lower than normal.

So are they simply more comfortable or are they significantly faster than a diamond ? I'm not really interested in buying one , just curious from a tech point of view about the advantages and disadvantages.

On the flat you can cruise 2-3mph faster, because there's less aero drag, even in trike types with the extra wheel. |You can brake like a car - very, very hard. And they can be very comfortable. Great fun on the short spins I've had.

Downsides: invisibile to other traffic; no getting out of the saddle to make short work of hills - you can sprint fairly effectively, but only for short distances becuse it relies on stomach muscles!

Would I have one? yes, if I had the cash for such an expensive spare bike - and somewhere to keep it.

I have been lusting after one of these for a good while.

ICE Monster

ICE make the nicest looking trikes for my money, and they build them out of T45. They've recently built a 21 pound version. Shame you wouldn't get much change out of £4K for a reasonably tricked out one.

The AVD Windcheetah and the Greenspeed GLR are both very tasty. If you click on the pic below, there's a cool video of someone doing some high speed corners on one. The 'bent rider forums are full of tales of blatting down hills at 60mph.

If you are looking for more info, 'bent rider online is a good place to start, as is its forum . From what I read, they are apparently impervious to headwinds, could all but brake test a Porsche (ICE used to run Hope discs, and currently run Avid mechanicals), and can be drifted through corners. Downside is that you need to learn to spin, as stomping just doesn't work, and you can't draft in the pack. ICE have offered me a test ride, but I'm not in a position to drop that kind of money right now.

The main think that'd put me off using a recumbent would be that being that low to the ground would make me nervous in traffic.

Yep, I reckon the Sarf London HGVs would just trundle over me and not even notice.

Shame 'cos I'd really like one.
