Video conferencing on Mac help

Posted by: Tony Smith on 10 May 2004

Hi Guys

Does anyone know how to video conference with Macs?

I have an iBook G4 running at 800mhz with 640mb of memory and have a Sony DV camcorder which I assume I can use as a webcam (connected via firewire). I have a 512 broadband connection which reaches the laptop via airport extreme.

I have iChat installed which tells me I can webchat with people using AIM (America Instant Messaging) accounts. I tried to set this up with a buddie in the USA who has a PC. No luck.

We then tried MSN. He has the latest version for PC which has a video and audio option on the message dialogue box. The latest version for Macs - v4.0 - does not have these options.

When I call up iChat I can get a window with my image on the screen but there is no second window for someone at the other end of the conference.
Also, the video icon at the bottom of the Buddy List is permanently greyed out.

I have played with my firewall and router settings so I'm hoping they are not the problem.

Although I have a slight idea of what I'm doing I would appreciate a Kindergarten explanation of what to do.

Many thanks in advance

Tony

The latest issue of Mac User (14th May) has a feature on page 78 entitled "Masterclass - Easy Video Conferencing".

Should do the trick.
