Thatcher's eulogy

Posted by: Kevin-W on 12 June 2004

Did anyone see the old bag's extraordinary eulogy to her late mate Ronnie yesterday? It was really odd - verging on the camp, I thought.

And what was all that coffin-stroking about? She really is losing the plot.

I know there's already a Reagan thread on this site, but I find it bizarre that RR is being rated as highly in the 20th century presidential pantheon as Franklin Roosevelt. Also, what's all this rubbish about Reagan and Thatch defeating the Evil Soviet Communist Empire (TM)? Wasn't there a bald bloke with a big stain on his head who played a part too (and played a far, far bigger part than Thatch, who was such a junior party in the "special relationship" that she was not even aware of - let alone able to stop - the American plan to invade Grenada?

I think at this moment in time a good few people in the USA need a hero and the spin doctors have delivered his hagiography to the public and the world at large just as required. I do think that a scant 20 years after his works it is to soon to sit in judgement upon his elivation to sainthood.

Kevin--

As someone who is a registered Democrat but who leans to liking Reagan, and as someone who is active politically, I find it incredible that Reagan is mentioned in the same class as FDR.

While I suspect he will go down as a "good" President, to equate him with "great" President's is a BIG stretch IMO. At this point, I would rate him above anyone since Ike, although LBJ is probably RR's equal overall.

Roy--I agree with you completely that it is a bit early to really judge his Presidency. Perhaps in another 10-20 years....

Best,

Bob

Her use of the old "slaves of communism" and "evil empire" terms was a bit classless, with Gorbachev in attendance. It reminded me why I always hated the old crusty bitch.

Worse, though, is how Bush Jr is using Reagan's death as an opportunity to try to cast himself in the same "brave leader with a vision" light and to try to position the "war" on terrorism as today's Cold War. Give me a break.

Maggie is senile, an alcholic and was always a mad old bat anyway. it was always going to be embarrassing.

There's a bit of history rewriting going on here. Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979, Reagan President in 1981, Gorbachev became globally relevant in 1985, before then he was just a long term servant of Communism.

I found this covering some of the basics. The world was a very different place 20 years ago, seems perhaps Maggie remembers that better than many.

She may well do.

The main thing I remember about her was how she destroyed many communities in the UK due to her policies based around greed.

History will show how she and her party raped this country.

It's a pity that she's too stupid and senile to stand trial for crimes against humanity. Just because she didn't mirder millions of her own people doesn't make her less of a monster.

Cheers

Seems like you old communists are still trying to rewrite history.

Harry--

I can understand not liking her policies, but "monster" does seem a bit strong...

What are you referring to?

"Monster" seems like a compliment. I always remember my father complaining that "Spitting Image" was far too kind to her. He generally referred to her as "that f***ing rabbit-toothed bitch" (not the type of phrase that my father would use about anybody under normal circumstances).

Harry, this one is good for passing on to freepers: How many people did Thatcher kill?.

Shame it wasn't that old bat's funeral.

I'd like to be there, when it happens to 'tramp the dirt down' as Elvis Costello once sang.

Andy.

That the old bitch took tea with that murdering bastard Pinochet when he was holed up in the UK a few years ago.

Then she had the temerity to tell theworld (and us Brits) that he wasa great friend of Britain who should be praised/sheltered or whatever.

That was probably even weirder than her eulogy for the Gipper.

One estimated Thatch at one's peril - when she was in power, anyway. But now, out of office for over 13 years, and without the ever-supportive Denis, she has slipped into a strange twilight world, alone with her ideas, which now seem to be sending her as mad as they once sent us.

Who , BTW, can forget that surreal moment when she draped a model of a BA plane with an "ethnic" tail fin with a napikin at a recent Tory party conference? Or her efforts to ensure thaat Willian "The Foetus" Hague (then Tory leader) didn't sleep with the fragrant Ffion at another conference, simply because they weren't married...

Well, I didn't realise there were so many educated people that hated Fatcha even more than I do! I was in the RAF in the 80s, and my colleagues had been bought by her with some tasty pay rises. Not much use to my dead friends in San Carlos.

Even someone as anti-Thatcher as me will admit that in 1979 Labour was unelectable. It's almost as much the fault of Labour as it was the Tories for the way the turned this country into one driven by greed.

Even now we suffer from that awful period in our history when the tories were in power for so long. People who are now at the top of the ladder in various companies were coming into business and working their way up during those years, their ideas are based around that ethos of greed instilled by Thatcher and the other selfish bastards she surrounded herself with.

It is my fervent hope that history does portray this woman and her party in their true light for how they decimated the fabric of our society.

Damn right! I'm not the sort of person who REALLY wants anyone to die, but I'll be partying when that stupid bint snuff it - plain and simple. Sorry if that offends anyone, but there it is...

That's just reminded me of how much she looks like a female version of Lord Crumb from Bad Taste:
