Replacement car ...

Posted by: reductionist on 09 November 2004

My car (VW Golf v6 mark 4 with lots of leather) is too small now. So I need a replacement. Please tell me what to look at as I am at a loss!

Points to consider:

Private buyer so no scheme like Dev B so 2nd hand best, 2 years old maximum and ideally less than 20000 miles

Not anywhere near as wealthy as Mick so £16000 max.

I like having 204bHp and 0-60 in 7 seconds I don't like a best fuel consumption (Motorway) of 30mpg

Considering:

Subaru Imprezza WRX Hatchback but put off by reports of noisy cabin (I do significant motor way journeys), poor interior (leather is rare) and no dealer nearby.

Passat v6: Same fuel problem and slower than current car

Audi A4 v6 Quattro: See Passat!

... and?

I agree. IME the straight fsi is very poor with a very flat, unexciting delivery and fails to show off the significant improvement in the Mark V handling over the Mark IV. The 2.0tdi is a great partner for the chassis and as Dave says, the new 2.0Tfsi is supposed to be an absolute barnstormer. The engine is currently available in the new Sportback which has slightly more room than your Golf, though it bursts your budget.

I still think that giving your wife extra room in the back with a 5 series or an A6 will earn you brownie points, make your life easier and shouldn't be remotely boring to drive.

I sort of agree, but I don't think I will succeed in persuading her that a bigger older higher mileage fast car is the way to go. I think she will conclude that a bigger, newer, lower mileage slow car is more sensible (took a long time to get her to agree to the v6 Golf and thats sensible in many ways).

I intend to try a few things this weekend.
