I was thinking of giving "The Atlantic Monthly" and "Smithsonian" a go for the first time.
Any comments or recommendations?

I can see it now - subscriptions for all the world's porn mags...........
<Crystal Ball mode OFF>
Seriously, National Geographic is all I subscribe to.

For some reason, I can never commit to a subscription even though I buy about a dozen magazines on a regular basis. Maybe I prefer browsing the shelves, just like a record store.
Atlantic Monthly is OK, but Harpers is better IME. For the past ~6 issues, the Atlantic's articles just haven't been that great (and it's not like there's been nothing to write about!).
The New Yorker can be outstanding, depending on the feature article.
Utne leans so far to the left it's practically a parody of itself. They actually published a piece recommending I take 6 months off and lay around doing nothing, FFS.
You surely know aboutAdbusters Based in Vancouver, they are basically a graphic design journal for anarchists and freaky hippies
Entirely thought provoking, though.
My current favorite is Foreign Affairs A bi-monthly journal that I can't help read cover to cover.
The Walrus , unlike other Canadian magazines, actually avoids being dreary and smelly. Give it a try you might be surprised.
What can you recommend?
PS as for porn, I can't stand what Playboy has become. The centrefolds have become personifications of everything that's wrong with society. Bring back the Playboy of the Carter administration

I used to read The Economist, Nat'l Geographic, and The New Yorker but they're all a bit pricey. I wanted to try something new. In general I'm more of a newspaper guy.
I should pick up a Harper's and try it out. I also see it's only $10.99/yr.

What do you think of the Economist? I tried out one issue, "Whose Coup in Haiti" on the cover and see that they refer to acupunture as "quack medicine".
I tuned out after that.

Everyone should have a subscription to Private Eye.
http://www.private-eye.co.uk
I don't think it's much to get a subscription from abroad, it's only about twenty pounds in the UK, and comes out fortnightly.

Ludwig:
The magazine I miss the most is The Listener. Anyway...
Washington Monthly is the news magazine for those of a progressive inclination.
The Nation is usually good too.
Mike:
The Economist should not be dismissed so quickly. The writing is usually of a very high standard; the sly captions alone are worth the price of admission.
Try them all at your local library first.

Another vote for the Economist. Probably my favourite English language magazine.

I love it. I let my subscription run out though, wanting to try something new after 6 years. Besides the print articles, I also like the exclusive online content.
I'll have to buzz over to my local megabookstore this weekend to flip through some of the mags mentioned here.
Private Eye- that's what Fritz read innit?

Oh, one I tried out but couldn't sink my teeth into every month was Scientific American.

To follow up:
I subscribed to Harpers and Smithsonian and a biz mag you'd all find dull.
Something to share- I noticed that if you order some magazines directly from the publisher they offer lower prices and much quicker delivery of the first issue, compared to going through Amazon for example.
