New Blue Nile al*** due
Posted by: rod ayling on 14 July 2004
Hi, Music Lovers,
Not sure if this has already been posted , but a new Blue Nile album is due on the 30th August, which I read about in Hi-fi choice and is even listed in Amazon.
A mere 8 years after their last album , the patchy but still worthwhile 'Peace at last' . Lets hope the new album 'High' can get close to the standard of 'Hats' and 'Tinseltown in the rain' and we can luxuriate in Paul Buchanan's gorgeous voice over all those sumptous textures and melodies. How many mentions of towns ,streets, lights and rain can we expect on High ?
Only about six weeks to go !
Regards,
Rod

Rod,
Great news indeed, it's so hot off the press that Sanctuary don't even list Blue Nile as one of their artists. I see that the CD is listed at Amazon for £8.99 and HMV for the bargain £16.99, choices huh?
I can't find the link right now, but a couple of weeks ago I found and article that said Paul Buchanan was suffering from a Debilitating Illness that questioned Blue Nile's future.

Thanks for the info Rod. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait?
Not with 'The Scottish Company' these days of course, but 'Peace At Last' was a superb recording.
When AMG gets itself sorted out (it was sort of working last night) it looks like they'll have track samples of nearly everything to check out.
Good price with a pre-order at Amazon.

Thanx Rod,
that was news to me. Just pre-ordered.
Sadly, they seem to be rush releasing this after only an eight year gap.

One of the few bands likely not to mess an album up by taking so long...

Are you sure about that Bruce?
The BN walk a thin line (Across The Rooftops?) between bland MOR and classic AOR. Peace At Last fell squarely into the former category. It's a great hi-fi test CD but doesn't come anywhere near being a great record. It's one of those albums that sounds so great you are decieved into thinking songs are better than they are and thus lower your standards IMHO.
Having said that the new one is on the list of things I must buy on the day it is issued and, if it's a return to form, then we are blessed.

I liked/loved all the previous albums so I'm really looking forward to the new one coming out.
A Walk Across the Rooftops is one of my all-time favourite records.

The Paul Buchanan / Blue Nile article I refered to above is here
I hope the Nile can Tour again as I would love to hear Paul's Voice 'live' for the first time.

Denis,
I saw them in Manchester on their last tour. I was front row dead centre and they were, frankly, awesome. It's not the voice that gets you though. It's the music; the atmosphere and their peculiar humour.

Apart from £3, does anyone know what the difference is between the cd and the "digipak"?

I've wanged in my pre-order with Amazon.
Furthermore; this thread made me dig out 'Hats' and I'd forgotten just how sublime some of it is. Ah; those aching vocals of Paul Buchanan. Like 'Small Hours' by John Martyn, it's really one for a cosy winter evening, with the lights out.
The Blue Nile are truly unique, and must have learned something from Linn, as it's the only band I've ever seen live that sounded like a furking great Hi-Fi system.
Let's hope the new album maintains the musical standard.

Just the thought of tracks like , Over the hillside , Lets go out tonight, Headlights on the parade, From a late night train and especially , The downtown lights, still give me the goosebumps

... I listened to my mate's preview/review CD yesterday and well, it's not very good. Certainly not in the league of Rooftops and Hats.
Some of it just sounds anonymous, a couple of tracks are awful, syrupy AOR (real hi-fi test record stuff).
There were three tracks I enjoyed, however, including the title track.
I will emphasise that I only heard it once, and I do stand to be corrected once I get my own copy and have had a chance to listen to it properly.

Hi,Kevin,
This all sounds a bit worrying. Parts of Peace at Last were a bit too slick and AOR sounding as well, but there was some lovely stuff which helped counteract that . Family Life anyone ?
Hi-fi choice seemed to be saying that advance reports of High were promising. So lets keep our fingers crossed. When I bought Hats on recommendation, first impressions made me feel I was listening to a very bland Radio 2 ( in those days !) MOR album, before the subleties and sheer beauty of their music came slowly through.
Lets hope age is not catching up with the band or the muse has deserted them .
Regards,
Rod

Possibly the Saddest Music In the World.
I occasionally have to skip it if I don't want to be all red-eyed.
Can't wait for the new one.
I hope all you BN fans have OvO by Peter Gabriel? Paul B sings on some great songs on there.
And as JN said, one of the few live gigs you could actually hear the vocals.

I'm such a BN anorak that I went to a modern dance show in a small Glasgow theatre in 1990 or so just because they had commissioned one of their pieces from Paul Buchanan. The dancing was competely lost on me; I convinced myself that the music was sublime.

Bob Harris is playing tracks from the new album on his Radio 2 show, on now.

Barney Hoskyns review is Here.
In any event, I will make every effort to see the boys twice if they tour. What venues around the UK would suit the Blue Nile sound?
J.N,
What tracks were played by Bob and your thoughts of course?
Kevin,
Have you heard the album again and does Barney capture your impressions.

Stephen,
Thanks, thats Venue#1 sorted and not far to travel either. I was very impressed with Tunbridge Wells Assemley Hall for the Richard Thompson concert, so thats Venue#2 already. Other Venue tips are welcome to help plan my tour.

I sort of agree with Barney Hoskyns. My beef with what i heard was that it sounded like "Peace At Last", which just doesn't cut the mustard as a Nile album. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, PB's voice is great, but it just doesn't sound as good as "Hats", which wasn't as good as "Rooftops".
From what I heard of the new album, there was little of the raw emotion, those mysterious chasms of sound, those extraneous ambient noises, the funk, the new take on Celtic music, that characterised both albums and especially the first?
Kevin
PS Are they touring or something? I saw the Nile at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road, London in 1990 (a fantastic place to see them) and the Albert Hall in '97 - both were fantastic gigs.

I just read the link. If that is a four star review I'd hate to read what he said about a two star album!
