Cable science

the XLR leads that ship with 135s are either left-channel- or right-channel- only.

The leads from older 135s (like mine) carry both channels, and it is apparently worth snipping the unused wire. My system is currently out of commission, so I did this last night to mine. (If you try this, don't snip the earth (green/yellow) and make sure you don't end up with two lefts or rights! Snip the cable (the SAME ONE) at both DIN and XLR ends. Oh, and er, don't do it unless you have 135s!)

Obviously, I haven't been able to listen to any differences yet, but I found something strange. The bolts holding my locking DIN plugs together had ALL worked loose (playing too loud, obviously). Mark Raggett (service dept) has confirmed that these should be tightened up.

Weird huh? Has anyone else had this?

cheers, Martin

By bolts, do you mean the screw head thingies (almost grubscrews) on the side of the plug just behind the locking ring?

If so, mine do work loose of their own volition. In fact one was so loose it actually fell out while I was swapping leads between inputs.

But I thought all they did was stop the locking ring from slipping back up the cable. What other function do they have?

Wahey, sounds like your 135s are even older than mine! Mine have a left and a right lead. Have you got plastic or metal XLR plugs - plastic is newer.

They hold the plug together!

Tony,

my earliest 135s and NAXO are in the 20,nnn range (my pairs date to '85, '87 & 89). They all have plastic XLRs.

My 52 is also a very early one - early 91 (they first came out in 1990).

Since my NAXO has the non-locking DINs I've also moved the locking rings back behind the grubscrews - Mark Ragget seemed to think this was OK.

cheers, Martin

P.S. My 135s have been serviced twice!

Four of my six 135s are serial #18xxx. They too came with dual-chanelled cables with metal surrounds and no ring-locks around the DIN ends. In addition the power cables were substantially longer than the current ones. I eventually replaced the signal cables with dedicated single channel ones- the improvements were maybe 1/2 the jump of going from gray to black SNAICS. And oddly enough the newer shorter mains cables were also an improvement, albeit a lesser one.

Everything makes a difference!

Hey, this is sounding promising.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get my system back up and running until the end of next week. Urgh.

I thought that snipping the 135 leads (at both DIN and XLR ends) was eqivalent to buying new mono ones.

Does anyone know different. (My existing leads have plastic XLRs and locking-collar DINs).

cheers, Martin

P.S. I've checked with my neighbours and they don't have a problem with my music. John shouldn't complain about my musical taste too much either - I get a lot of my new discs after hearing them first at his.
