Short review of the 5(00) series, or an evening at Pohl's

Posted by: M. Brandstetter on 30 October 2000

Dear, all.

First sory for my long absent period.
I finished my thesis and now changed my job to
an IT-Employe. At present i'm dealing with planning and running a network.
So far...
Last friday (27.10) there was a little hifi event
at Klnagstudio Pohl in Mainz. There i had a fantastic meeting with Mr. Paul Stephenson.
(Bye the way, thanks for that meeting paul, i enjoyd it very much.)
So, i guess you are mainly interested in the hifi objects presented then in my talks with paul and thomas.

They shiped over the holy grail, consisting of the super gear, CDSII, 52, 500, NBL. This gear is without questions a big landmark where one can not pass bye without a closer look. They presented this on hutter racks. (Joel you are right, this hutter stuff looks very beautifull and sounds good.)
Mabye DBL's would sound better....but i thnk they wouldn't look that coll in the domestic environment of the studio.
Nevertheless i poped in later the evening, so i started with the listening of the holy grail, and if bank balance would allow i would order a CDSII right away , maybe alos in caouse of this sweet remote control "Flash"... YEP the old 72 lover found a remote attractive. Folks i can tell you the Flash is a lovely gimmick and a state of the art industrial product. It feels heavy and comfortable...
I think i don't need to make much words about the music comming out of that gear, it was simply earth shaking. Paul brought a lot of nice cd's with him, and it was a pleasure having him changing and electing the music for that evening. One gets driven into the mood, that they realy do know what the customer likes.
GOOD JOB!!!
As it goes, the CDSII presents the music with such a detail and fluidment that there is no miss for a Turntable.
It was my third 500er i heard, and as the last times, it's simply impressiv. The music just sucks you in.
Enough of this. They also shipped the new 5series, where i hadn't heard any component up to now.
So i came late i missed the nait5, but they also brought other gimmicks.
We changed from the monster to CD5,NAT05,112,150,Credo. First we heard the CD5 with the same track as before with the big boys.
So you have to reset the brain. The first seconds where a tiny hint of what the big gear has presented. But after a few seconds the music returns to the listener.
I don't wanna talk the little gear bad, i just want to tell that if you heard the components up the ladder, you will recognise the downsteps. But if you hear into them you will recognise that there is this naim-sound, the way naim touches your soul. Even in this tiny boxes it is inbuild. Out of that they are also to be rated high.
Nevertheless, it was my first contact with the new five series they where touchy. The CD5 is indeed a big jump from the CD3.5. (Ok, maybe this is not mainstream i'm writing here, but you know me...i alwayd say what i think, so ignore me if you've got another opinion.)
Paul explained a few of the changes in the 5series, so the electronics is hold in another way then before, it has more freedom to move. So microphonic effects are downsized.
The little gear was fired also with a new flatcap2, which dirves the cd5 and 112 at the same time.
The 112 is a good new product. And i would love to compare it with a 72 or a 102. The 150 maybe similar to the 140, but not near the 180. But the design looks cool.
They also presented the nat05, which is more or less a replacement for the 03. In fact it's not a replacement, it's far better. And this touch pad is nice to use. BUT WHERE is the tuning knob ....ok, one hast to go with the mass so it's remote controllable(i didn't get whether the flash can do it) and has presets.

Thanks again to the guys from naim who made this evening take place. Thanks to paul who made it an outstanding experience.

Hopefully, you can share some of your experience with me. Feel free to comment and ask questions.
Reagrads, mathias

PS: Take care of the purple people.

With no link to Naim or music, Mainz is my mother's birth town. Two years before she died we went together to visit the place and it is a lovely town - I have a special feeling to it.

I don't agree with you about the new look of the 5 model. I think it is quite UGLY (I'm not talking about the NAp-500) but sounds great.

Yep, Mainz is a nice town.

So, the studio is a bit outside of that.
Nevertheless there is a nice aerea for wine
also.

If you visit germany again be welcome.

Bye the way, if you look at a complete rack of 5series components, it realy looks cool.
Mixing them with the old stuff, maybe you are right, but then also the 500 doesn't fit.
Time ago i rolled on this lawin asking for the design issue. But at the end, we love music and hopefully our better half does too. Then the look isn't longer important. ....

mathias

Congratulations Mathias - writing a thesis and holding down a job is difficult and requires total dedication (voice of experience here too).

Remember that after the viva you are likely to need to make corrections. Not out of the woods yet!

Dear all,
thanks for the contribution.

It's nice to know that there are friends in the world .
Yeah, finishing the thesis wasn't that easy, it tooks a long day and night turn, but at least it's done.

The new job, so far is very interesting and similar to what i've done before in the physics departement, just a bit upscaled ...so to speak from nait1 to 52/500 jump ....

Hope you are all fine?
What have i missed during my absence?

Have a nice evening folks.

Yeo Matthias, welcome back!

Are you managing to devote much time to the turntable's evolution, or has that had to take a back seat with wage earning and network design?

Rico - musichead

Dear Rico,

it's done and working.
It's not a complete new design, cause making a bearing would cost a fortune. Therfore i could have easily bought a Verdier, which at present i would judge as the best affordable Turntable.

(Sory, ok, the LP12 is also a good product.)

just to not kick a bashing lawine.

Kidding, ok, the bearing realy seems the main problem, and the offers for building one where realy expencive. So, i had not the machines to try it by my own, i used my former thorens to mod it.

And in comparisons with a Phonosophie3, or an LP12 it gains. Maybe i found a good Power-Unit for bettering the signal. Problem is that the Armageddon would not work, cause the Voltage is to high. For that machine i would need around 18V-24V not much more. The Geddon is (i think) 70V, cause the LP12 motor needs a big Voltage to start. The Lingo then regulates the voltage down to a low average one, but the geddon does not.
This could also be the reason why the lingo doesn't sound that good and brings noise to the mains.

So, if naim would offer a geddon with lower output i would like to try on imediatly.
( Nay hints about that, for pour Thorens Users?? )

At present i have the Standard P3 power unit, which was a big leap form the standard thoren one.
So i realy would like to try out a better psu.

What about you.
As i asked above, what have i missed so far.
Tell abit.

Bye the way, on the last forum i remember there was this hifi-story how we all start with it.
Is this still existing? Or has anyone started a new of that?
