CDS2 and Naim CD oddity - explanation wanted!

Posted by: Engelbert on 30 December 2000

My new CDS2 was installed a couple of weeks ago and, wow, it already sounds great - even though common "Forum wisdom" would suggest it still needs another month or so to properly run in.

One very odd thing though. I have about thirty Naim CDs and the CDS2 seems to play them all OK with the exception of Number 021, "Meet Me In London" (Antonio Forcione & Sabina Sciubba) - which happens to be a real favourite of mine! This CD refuses to track properly on my CDS2 - skips and misses badly and is simply unlistenable. Never experienced this problem using my CDX (which I traded on the CDS2). Yesterday I borrowed a friend's Number 021 - but exactly the same problem occurred! (Neither my own CD nor my friend's has any visible sign of damage whatsoever.)

Seems weird. Does anyone know what is going on? Is there any reason why my CDS2 should have problems with this particular Naim recording? Has anyone had a similar experience?
Explanations appreciated!!

Contact your local distributor (Chris Murphy, Naim NZ?) to obtain a newer copy of said disc. Current pressings are OK; the original pressing had less silver reflective coating (look through the disc), which caused some discs to skip on some players.

Go and see Chris.

Same combo of CD and CDS2 works fine for me.

Congratulations on the CDS2, the first few weeks are a transport (no pun intended) of delight.

With Wellington's weather this Xmas it's been best to stay indoors - so you have a perfect excuse !

Cheers

Thanks guys for your suggestions. After my original posting I actually found a few more CDs that gave problems. My dealer suspected a faulty transport (laser) and - in his characteristic efficient and pleasant manner - replaced. This seems to have sorted the problem!
Cheers, Rob.
