How do I tell if a Rolex is genuine?
Posted by: Markus S on 14 October 2004
Hi all,
a friend has inherited from his father a mechasnical watch that purports to be a Rolex Submariner. I know there are sites dedicated to all things horological, but I can't be arsed to find one. Anybody here knows what to look out for to tell the real thing from a fake?

I suppose that Rolex's have become a victim of their own success and become a little "obvious".
That's a shame really.
I wonder how many of us would still be so loyal to Naim if you could buy the stuff at Comet? If Rolex were clever, they would supply only through specialist jewellers and forget the high street. That would elevate their status back to what it should be.
Rasher - marketing genius.

Late in the day this I know, but in saying the above, I consider this to be Fritz's "Eric Cantona" moment.....

I used to have a genuine TAG Heuer and got sick of people asking me if it was real. So I sold it and got a Breitling Chronomat. Awesome watch which is built like a brick shithouse. If there are fakes of these around, there's no way they will look as beautifully finished or feel as solid as my watch.
Aha. you think there are realy no perfect breitling fakes on the market. Be sure there are.there are also ferrari car replicas and
mark levinson amp fakes on the market.
naims authencity is allways defineted through its sound.
the authentcity of a watch or a car is definated through many different factors.
tose factors together build the original. If one factor is not correct it is not longer the original. Rolex with japanese movement, ferrari
with non ferrariengine.
the benefit of Naim:you listen to your amp
and it takes you one second to say if its a naim or not (also in a blind test)

Only certain Rolex models are copied, so if you're wise; you buy one of the unfaked models.
Which is what I did when I bought mine.
As for other people walking around with fakes, that is their choice. Personally I wouldn't be such a cheapskate to wear a fake. If you can't afford the real thing, then buy a brand that produces decent watches at a lower price.
The plus side of course is that those who walk around with fakes make it safer for those of us that wear the real thing. If some mugger mistakes our Rolex for a fake, then they are unlikely to mug us.

Wear it for thirty years and when it breaks down send it to Rolex for a complete re-build. This works.

Mike does't like my 30 year method.
However this is how it worked with me.
A long time ago I was on hols to Hong Kong and a mate asked me to pick up a Rolex for him. No probs but when I saw how they were giving them away I got one for myself. But then self doubt set in and before you know it I was convinced they must be fakes. Well, getting to Bangkok I had them checked out. Genuine I was told. Was that good enough, no way, I was still in Asia after all. Years later finally had mine serviced and no probs, definitely genuine.
So wore my Rolex for 30 years and then it flaked out. Local jewellers told me ,no good ,cannot repair, Rolex very jealous about their watches, so sent watch to Rolex in Melbourne for a total rebuild. Result a completely new watch. Cost: $1000.
Replacement cost $5000. Like my Naim I luv my Rolex.
