Bashing the Beeb

Posted by: Earwicker on 05 January 2005

Methinks it's time to start a new thread so that we can all give vent to our hatred of the Biased Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

To get us started, here are a few reasons I think they should be bashed:

1) Flagrant political bias towards the Labour Party

2) Irritating anti-Israeli, anti-American "woe is me, poor little terrorists, how badly they're treated" news coverage

3) Appallingly dumbed-down news and current affairs programmes and crap quality PC dramas

4) Vicious loathing of those hateful white middle class English folk who play their indefensible license fee

5) The license fee itself - I'd rather watch Channel 4, but if I own a TV I have to pay those scum-sucking parasites at the BBC over £100 quid a year! (Shouldn't it be their responsibility to stop me watching their dire nonsense if I haven't paid? Don't see why owning a TV automatically means I want to watch Eastenders, and C4 News is better!)

6) Showing all the half-way decent programmes on channels none of us can receive... after we've paid for the damn things!!!!

Let's all change channel and see what the chickens are up to on Coronation Farm.

Anyway, that's my caring-sharing speech for the day! Phew!!! Roll Eyes

Actually Heartbeat is on ITV.

As the vast majority of the Britsh (amonsg't many others) 'literate' population
derives it's 'news' information from the Murdoch/Barlcay's owned-inspired media
in some way or another, it's hardly sensible to dismiss them totally out of hand
as trash³, irrespective of what young ace/rich yuppies think of them, innit !
Likewise that radical Communist rag 'Private Eye' often accused of starting
trouble just for troubles sake, and making a laughing stock of the true
investigative journalistic world (Journo's to those with mates in the know) with
their continuous contrived speculative & damaging nonesense that's often landed
them before the beak, bankrupting and banning them for life on many occassions,
and even ordering that they actually advertise SKY TV in their midst as
recompense for their sins, whils't simultaneously slaggin the old antideluvian
bugger off with a vengeance (good business sense I call it, innit !!!).

Fritz Von I bet our Tony's missin David's wise council !!!

Like Fuck he is, say's Alisdaire and he should jolly well know, he's an ex.Sun
shoestring-hack, or as Our Mat would say (a Journo)

N.B. Please don't bother to thank me Our Mattt, to be called Yuppie is a fine
compliment and you definately are one my son, Oh Yes you are ! dinnee be shy: Roll Eyes

Doesn't the BBC show Buffy reruns? How can you fault a corp that airs BVS? You're treading on awfully thin ice there, Mr. Wicker, knocking the Buffy Broadcasting Corporation.

I love the BBC. Don't know what your problem is. There's always FOX or CNN to keep you news "right". If you don't like don't watch. Choices. You'd soon miss it if it was gone. BBC world service is terrific. Try it.

As for "political bias" oh so soon you forget!

Anti-Israeli. Are you sure?

The world has changed.

Doug (who is happy with the licence fee, or is it just because they use Nap 250 pro amps in the news studio

As from at some point this year the German TV licence (similarly priced to the
UK one and covering the first two national stations ARD/ZDF akin to the remnents
of Auntie Beeb) will change radically. Although as far as I'm aware the actual
price won't alter much, all persons with computers (internet connections) will
also be liable to pay for a walid bit ov paper, innit, a wheeze of which I
strongly suspect will not pass our Gordon's (or his successor's) notice, and as
they've basically ruined the BBC's independence & credibiloity, with the help of
the fickle British pubic, you get what you deserve, and I really wouldn't be at
all suprised if it's sooner rather than later owned by Murdoch/Barclay's then
you'll really have something to moan about, when it's far too late as per usual,
innit.

Pish: I for one as previously stated have no problem in paying the Beeb an
annual subscription for what I require: Time is of the essence:

Re access to the channels you say you cannot recieve.

Your only excuse is if you are in an area that forbids the erection of satellite dishes, or external TV aerials or does not have cable

otherwise you can get a set top box to receive FreeView or buy a Sky box and dish and run it wihout taking on a subscription.

I guess your forbears were mightily unimpressed that they could not see the pictures on the radio when TV trasmissions started - grow up and do some research

I loved Spooks and generally am a big fan of the BBC - with the obvious exception of their news and current affairs bias (upon which I think my views are well known).

I read today that their viewing figures are down to new lows, partly as a result of giving up The Simpsons to Ch 4. But wasn't the Simpsons a good example of what's good about the BBC? An episode was 20 minutes long and flowed beautifully. Now, on Ch 4, The Simpsons lasts for 1/2 hour and has all those damn commercials.

BBC Radio 4 - for me, the only source of adult entertainment, information and discussion.
I don't know about the television channels but the content of Radio 4 does not (with notable exceptions and Women's Hour) insult the intelligence.
It is also quite reassuring to an old pinko like me that the snug slippers of the smug Beeb is still able to piss off so royally the people I never wanted to become in my dotage.
Rock on Peter Day, rock on Humphrey (Lyttleton) and ROCK on Eddie Mair.

Oh BUGGER - It's Pam Ayers on just now.

Derek,

I can't get digital where I am (in Oxted, Surrey) via a set top box. I can't get Ch 5 either. Does that mean I have to grow up too or can I remain a child for the next 50 years as I have for the last 50?

Political Bias

come election time all the parties will be slagging off the Beeb for favouring the other parties - so perhaps the Beeb is closer to being unbiassed than the extremists amongst us are prepared to admit

Us nerds in the HiFi hobby arena owe a large debt of gratitude to the Beeb for the work they have done in the past to advance our strange hobby

7v - you can get a satellite dish with no subscription to receive the free channels

It will be interesting to see what your options are when the analog TV signal is switched off, they should may increase the digital signal strength to reach your area

However regardless of your age you were not obsessing about inaccessible channels so no need to grow up <g> just make the best of the next ten years

So ignoring the reasons why, let's assume that you have no desire to watch anything from the BBC. Ever.

Why should you have to pay for a TV licence?

Excellent parody of a half-witted turd, Mr Dacre! Well done!

Kevin

PS - Paul Hutchings: some time last year I wrote quite a detailed post about the licence fee and the merits of the BBC in general.

The reason why you have to pay the licence fee to watch TV (whether you watch the Beeb or not) is because the law says you must. If you don't like it, there's nothing to say that you have to have a telly. Or you could vote for a party that pledges to scrap the BBC and change the law.

And anyway, as Auntie is by far the most important cultural institution in the UK, there is probably nobody in the country who is not touched by its broadcasting output, community projects, arts sponsorship or print publishing or web activities.
Posted on: 05 January 2005 by Earwicker
Yeah, well the law's crap then isn't it Kevin! I don't like The Guardian either but I don't have to buy it!! I should be able to own a TV for free-to-air viewing only or watching videos without breaking the law. No other media organisation gets away with charging for its services regardless of whether people actually want them. (Except, perhaps, the government!)

I forgot they were a Naim client though - at least they spend our money on SOMETHING decent!!

By the way, Radio 3 is okay, I like R2 when I'm driving and the regional orchestras are highly commendable - especially the BBC Philharmonic. Not all bad I suppose. Razz

Well said.

And by the way, Kevin, it may be that the reason why there's nobody who isn't touched by the BBC is because we're all OBLIGED to have it!!!

Earwicker,

Instead of taking up bandwidth with this incessant whinging, either come up with a workable alternative, or emigrate.

Your choice.

Maybe I SHOULD watch telly - Low Interest Loans. You'll be telling me that there are foods I can eat without feeling guilty.
