Why bother?
Would you prefer to get the feedback from real users, or from a magazine that almost has hyperbole in it's standard text (though it is an interesting read).
I can summarise it by saying that they thought it was pretty good, but they say that about virtually everything they review.

Just bear in mind that HF+ themselves state that they pick their reviewers based on the reviewers equipment preference. So no wonder they like stuff.

From what I've seen/heard, there's very few genuinely bad products, simply ones that are focused on doing things well in a different way to what some people like. This is what mags should be identifying and pointing out.

While I do enjoy reading hifi mags and looking at the pictures they really blow my mind sometimes. A quick example: One of the big mags reviewed the cd5i (forget which one - maybe what hifi). Anyways, the cd5i was a five star group test winner. It beat out a few cdps I can't remember and the runner up was a cyrus cd8. Now, before buying my cd5i, I did extensive comparison with a bald cd5. To me, The difference was minimal, but if they were the same price I would have picked the cd5. This same magazine gives the cd5 a four star rating (end of last year) say that it has been surpassed by the competition. Odd, damn odd. Of course they give the linn Genki 5 stars.

Which Tom Alves have you been reading?

As I recall he prefers the older kit/newer i kit to the 5 series because it is less "refined" and more "exciting". I may of course be entirely wrong in my interpretation Smile

Exactly, they have to make a living out of selling reviews. Telling everyone everything is fairly good and to go listen for themselves will not sell many magazines!

Totally agree, in fact I think What Hi-Fi is quite good at trying to explain what different kit does well and not so well.

While I've been replying I refreshed the thread, I see Tom has already replied. I like Tom's posts because he explains where he is coming from. This helps because I have worked out that my tastes are different, I personally prefer the 5 series stuff, but that is me. I'm sure if we compared music collections there would be differences too.

I have to say that if I was coming new to Naim now I would be very tempted by the 'i' kit, purely because there is no easy upgrade path, upgraditis is biting Wink

I see in your post that within the "Quotes" there is an 'Originally posted by [Username]:'
How do you add that automatically? When I use the quote function it just copies the text.

You'll notice that each message has two icons on the bottom right. Hover over the one on the left and you'll see that it says "Reply with Quote". That's the one.

Whilst Tom and I are well apart on how we like our systems to sound (wouldn't life be boring blah blah) the quote from HiFi+ exactly ties in with his comments on how the i stuff sounds. Pretty unambiguous really.

Hy there!Benefit of reading Hifi+:
Always the b e s t pictures of any hifi gear.
For me it is an intresting magazine and they test a lot of affordable stuff.(not only)

Maybe there are different opinions about HiFI+
compared to stereophile ,what hifi,or others.

imo all those magazines are better than
most german magazines like stereoplay or image Hifi (for the rich with bad taste)or Audiophile (for the superrich without any taste
and therefore a good marketing target group)

My problem with the reporters is,that they often do not dare to write down there exact opinion about a kit compared to an other.

The reason why i am in this forum to get opinions of users.(and not opinions of payed reviewers)Of course they are objective, but they are always paid (by magasine
readers and advertising)So give the people what they want(to hear) Wink

The reason I wanted to read the Hifi+ review on Nait 5i is that they are good at describing products, even though they maybe are overly positive sometimes. But if you read the whole review you can read what's good and bad. There are not many very bad hifi products out on the market anymore so it's also hard to write really negative reviews and people have different tastes. So if you are a reviewer on a hifi mag. and personally don't like a product you have to think about that there“s people liking this kind of sound and you that you have to be objective....So there really is no bad products out there, just different tastes...
Som products have better perfomance for the price though..

Bravo Paul, though it was embarassing to laugh out loud when one of my assistants was talking to me. Sad life I lead.

MartinB - send me a private message and I'll see what I can do re HiFi+.

Personally I like HiFi+ for the pretty pictures and the exposure they give to some of the less mainstream brands. I also subscribe to Stereophile because its dirt cheap, again reviews some US/foreign gear that has no exposure in the UK and the monthly columns are usually pretty good.
