Armageddon Mods

Posted by: trickytree on 03 May 2004

I think i'm right in saying that the Armageddon project was instigated becouse Naim felt that the then top of the range LP12 was holding back development of there own products. My question is, what did these mods consist of?

Obviously the power supply is one, was the Aro done at the same time? Were there any other mods to the LP12 itself that were never made available? Finaly did Naim make any phono stages for Linn, I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the Linto was a Naim design?

Thank you for any light you can shed on the subject.

Hi Paul,
I have an old Linn 'The Linnk', kicking around somewhere which clearly states, "made by Naim Audio for Linn Products". It has, I believe a very similar circuit to the 32.5 mc boards.
Hope this helps,
Pete

The Aro came quite a bit later. The arm on the original Armageddon turntables was a modified Ittok.

From what I remember, the Armageddon LP12 had a higher spec main bearing, and the Ittok also had higher spec bearings in it. IIRC, there was also a modified arm mounting. There was a phono stage built into the plinth - not sure of the details, but I was told it was just a couple of Naim phono boards, which were powered by a HiCap. And lastly, the power supply for the TT motor, which was obviously the direct precursor of the current Geddon.

HTH,

"higher spec main bearing", "Ittok also had higher spec bearings", "phono stage built into the plinth"

Sounds like it was an Ekos / Cirkus / Prefix / Armageddon then

Thanks very much all, most helpfull.

Mmmmm, wonder where the Ittok bearings came from. Could be usefull to know as there are quite a few of these arms out there with shot bearings nowadays. Anyone from Naim care to give us a clue??

They probably came from Linn, and were probably "selected" bearings from normal production, rather than ones specifically made to higher spec, although I could be wrong about that.

Don't forget, Linn and Naim were speaking to each other back then Wink
