Micromega DIY Question / Help!
Posted by: Martin D on 06 May 2004
Any DIYers out know the answer? My brother has a player from said company and the discs will not spin, giving and error. I took out the transport and its stamped CDM4/19. I looked on the interweb for parts but it seems this drive is no longer made. I also wondered if the motor drive part of the main PCB could be at fault as when you turn the player on/off it does about 1 rev before stopping, could this mean the motor is Ok but not being driven properly. Any comments welcome

There are (likely to be) two Philips surface-mount chips on the servo board; one of these controls the motor drive (PWM, i believe?) and may be faulty. You'll need the replacement chips (7808 / 7809?), but this may not absolutely solve the problem.
Best of luck - you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Forgive my ignorance but why don't you just email Micromega? I sent a Stage 3 back for repair and they were cheap and excellent. Must remember to sell it now I have the CDX2/XPS2.

Mike Hi
I went looking for their contact details. I could only find a page displaying the logo but no other contact info - are they still in business?

Martin,
Try this. It worked for me. They were prompt, helpful and did the job cheaply. The only thing they did wrong (!) was that I sent my Stage 3 back in a Naim box (Tsk Tsk) as my original Micromega had long since decayed and the buggers kept it and sent my player back in a far inferior (but still sturdy) box of their own.
Anyway, the address I used was
info@micromega-hifi.com
After that I dealt with Sebastien SCHAER at s.schar@micromega-hifi.com
The correct address for their site is
www.micromega-hifi.com.
They correspond in good English and dealt with my one query about whether they meant what I thought they meant with a neat line in droll gallic humour. Boy was I embarassed.
Good luck,
Mike H.

Martin,
It looks like a transport problem, the laser doesn`t detect a disk, so stop spining. The problem is probably on the laser unit, the laser is dead or too weak or the focus can not be made. An the transport is no longer available. As said try to contact Micromega, but i`m not sure they are still in business. Or you can contact an ex-dealer, may be he can help.
Good luck.

Can I just add some reassurance here. They are very much still in business but the rumours started when they got lost a lot of their distribution in various countries.

Mike,
That`s true, they have lost most of their distributors and no one replaced them? Do you know why?
Their web site doesn`t work anymore, so what happens to them?

Manu,
No idea what's going on with the web site. It smacks of a redesign but you would notrmally do those elsewhere before going live. The email addresses do seem to still work though.
I do recall that the focus of the web site was very much more audio visual and that surprised me so I do wonder if they were simply a little ahead of their time when they lost/ended their distribution deals in the late 1990s?
I was led to believe they had gone bump back in 1996 and my dealer expressed surprise last year when I said they hadn't.
