Firefox tweaks

Posted by: Mekon on 28 December 2004

Any leet users discovered something useful recently? This popped up on Daypop, and it seems to work for me.

quote:
Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

4. Restart Firefox.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Some reckon that fiddling with the Prefetch command makes for a faster loading of Firefox, this prefetch stuff might also work for a load of other progs.

Yea, appeared to do nothing.

The only thing I like about the new firefox is there is a live folder with the latest news in it, I wish Safari did that.

Hi, I wanted to try this on my mac and got as far as:
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
Question is: what is the equivalent of right click on the mac?
Grateful for any assistance

Hold the CTRL key and then press the mouse button to get the context menu

I have bought a MacMice two button plus spin wheel mouse which has improved productivity on the Mac dramatically
however

if you are into Photoshop type stuff and are thinking of getting a pad eg Wacom type thing then I think that you get a two button mouse etc as part of the package - I have not proved that the Wacom mouse does the same as a MacMice one yet.

Have the latest wacom which does come with a mouse as well, but of course you have to use it on that surface.

By far the best mouse I have owned is the logitech MX1000 which is a dream to use, wireless and is great in OSX, it has lots of buttons so for instance two of them page forward and back in a browser and another two increase or decrease text, coupled with the superb USBoverdrive you can set the buttons to do any thing in individual applications.

Anyone who was thinking about a wacom should really consider the new intous3 series, they are dreamy!

What size Wacom pad do you have?

Do you maximise the image on screen to give maximum resolution with the pad

Derek, I have the software mapping to screen which means the placement of the pen on the pad corresponds with that part of screen.

I have the small wacom as I couldn't afford the bigger one, but if you are thinking of buying it will increase your productivity 100%

BTW Derek, do you know of a 'master' reset on the E10 mine is playing funny buggers at the moment, I really think the metering has gone south because all my pictures are turning out really grainy, even in good light conditions, I have tried everything to no avail (Bar the manual mode because I don't know to much about that yet)

E10 master reset - do not know of one - switching off, removing battery that is all I can think of.

Have you set the ISO setting higher than usual that could cause grain due to noise
or reset the image compression or image size to give a worse image quality

Also you could try asking on the Olympus SLR Talk forum on DPReveiw web site - there are quite a few users of Olympus DSLRs and they may have an answer.

Olympus SLR Talk Forum

however be very careful in what you read on that forum otherwise you may get tempted to updgrade to the E1 or E300 <g>
