BIT Torrent

Chaps
I have a bit more time on my hands now a days and would like to download a load more stuff such as pics etc from the internet.
A friend who knows a little about the IT world has suggested BIT Torrent. I must confess that I have never heard of it, but it does sound useful.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this and is it ok, virus ridden, easy to use or whatever.
Many thanks
Mick

In a 5 minute 'I wonder what this is all about' moment, the impression I got was that it is a valuable resource, so long as your primary interest is hentai.
I know all the cool kids use it, so I guess I am missing something.

Although Mick has always stuck me as a pre-pubescent girls with large breats fighting giant lizards from Graf-Ventai VI sort of guy.

Mick,
What is happening to you?? You seem to be undergoing some kind of transformation!
Or am I missing something?

It's a peer-to-peer file trading network specifically designed for the efficient sharing of very large files. It's main use is the exhange of DVDs, software, etc. a lot of which is (presumably) illegally copied.
I've never used it so don't know much more than that. My impression is that it is less dodgy than Kazaa but downloading stuff always carries soe risk.
There is an FAQ at http://dessent.net/btfaq/

My 6 year old daughter has just read this and is now wanting to know "why men want to be hit by riding crops by leather clad ladies".
It really has put me in a most awkward situation regarding what to tell her. This is a hifi forum and, whilst I appreciate that this thread was in the padded cell, I really don't think this sort of thing is appropriate. Shame on you, Mr. Parry - I'd always thought of yourself as the moral majority on this forum and am sorry that it looks like I was wrong.
Regards,
Chris.

If a six year old girl can read that, then you should ensure that she is fast tracked for uni at the age of ten.
Never the less I take your point, she could have been 11 yrs.
It will not happen again.

Hi Mick
Not only could she read it, she was able to pick up on some syntax errors, too. Maybe there's something to be said, then, for the benefits of not smacking your child?

Chris.

I have been using bit torrent for a while and to be honest it hasn't really lived up to all the hype.
When it works it is fast, basically what you do is search the net for a torrent file such as suprnova.com
You download this file and it tells the rest of the world you are looking for that file. Soon you are pulling in parts of that file from any amount of sources on the web. The difference between this and say limewire is that it can build the programme from bits like a puzzle, where as traditional peer to peer builds the file from beginning to end.
The good news is when this works it goes very fast, you can download 600meg files with reasonable ease. When it works.
For most stuff I use limewire for 'pictures etc'

Mick,
garyi has pretty much described it.
Personally I find it useless, you spend way too long in my experience looking for a torrent that actually works, and when you find on the speed is usually close to awful, plus to realise the full download speed you have to allow access to your PC on certain ports (in plain english slightly open your firewall).
If you want to download stuff take a look at usenet, far more reliable and usually speed isn't an issue.
cheers,
Paul
