Can anybody tell me from where the rating of individual threads comes from and who decides how many stars are awarded for certain topics?

Franz,
When you open a given thread, you'll find a little pull-down menu near the bottom right of the screen that lets members rate it from one to five stars.
I just gave yours a five-star rating. I assume if another person gave it just one star, the program would take the average [(5+1)/2] and give it three overall.
In practice it seems that members only bother to rate threads if they're really good or really inane.
