Anyone going to see Rush?
Come on - you know you love them! Those grizzled Canadian prog rockers Rush are playing at Wembley Arena (not the best music venue but what the hell) on Wednesday 8th & Thursday 9th September this week. Their first UK tour in 15 years apparently (last time was the "Hold Your Fire" tour back in 1988)! To quote Pete Drummond "Get out of those bath chairs and get down there!"

I've given up on gigs but if I still trudged about they'd be on my 'must see' list. I hope it's a good one (should be) and I hope they don't spend an hour playing covers - what a waste of time that would be.

I hope it's recorded too. The Rio DVD was bloody awful IMO for sound quality.

Have fun.

Oh sorry. Are you actually going? (thinking about it this reminds me of a discussion in pink space so I'm probably repeating myself)

Cheers

Thanks Harry I will,

Yes I'm actually going both nights as luck would have it. Given the responses both here and elsewhere though perhaps I should have kept this to myself...

There are obviously very few Rush fans on the naim forum. I have to say that when I saw/heard the Rio DVD the soundtrack was running through a hifi system powered by a valve amp and sounding pretty good to these ears.

Mole Man I'll reply.
Its OK nick I'm big enough to take it.
Sally(Mrs H) are going on Wednesday, a mate from my ex-work is also going but hes a young lad in his late 30s.
I have recently bought and watched live in Rio and if they are any where near as good on wednesday it will be brilliant.

nick was it your album list shown recently? If so did I not spot some Rush albums?
No more helium jokes(?) then?

I used to take the piss out of an old college friend of mine for liking Rush.

He's since fled to America, never to be seen again.

I wonder what it all means....

Thanks for the replies guys...

I think this thread should now delve deeper into the recesses of Rush and prog rock in general. Maybe we can get members to list their favourite Rush album and why they like it. The Rush backlash starts here!

Mole Man

P.S. If you don't like Rush then nominate another prog album instead. I know there is another prog thread but you can't get too much prog!

You'd have to like Tom Sawyer, no? Confused
Posted on: 06 September 2004 by analogkid
Or any of the tracks from Moving Pictures, which is my personal favourite.
Posted on: 06 September 2004 by DavidY80
I'll be there on Thursday. Smile

Crap seat unfortunatley, but I just wasn't prepared to pay through the nose to get any closer.

And FWIW, Rush are the best live act I have ever seen....and I have seen quite a few.

We are in Block D rear rhs on the flat. Loved them last time I saw them at Hammersmith, Hemispheres tour I think.

nick sorry about accusing you of being a Rush fan,how can you EVER live it down? How humble do I have to be? :rolleyes Razz :
Any idea who it was who posted their album list, Tom?

Well Nick, in the insterest of consistency you might as well just go ahead and assert that your taste is in fact impeccable. Wink

P.S.: Quite an Andreas Vollenweider collection you have there....

Very difficult to nominate a favourite albumn because of the way they've evolved. I think Signals probably comes top of the heap, but not by much. I used (among other things) Territories from Power Windows to audition a CDX2 last month - that really sorts out the real CD players from the wannabes! Digital Man too - for obvious reasons if you're a Rush fan Smile

I watched the Rio DVD through my telly. I don't have an AV set up. Could be there's just too much information in there for a tinny telly to handle. I thought the performance was pretty stunning though - I've never seen or heard them do a duff gig.

I've got remasters of Counterparts, Test For Echo and Vapour Trails on order and am smacking my chops with anticipation. Moving Pictures and (in particular) Signals remastered are well worth a listen.

Hope they do a 'proper' albumn soon.

Please let us know what the gigs were like.

Thanks

Harry

Ok then, I will own up to being partial to Rush.

Unfortunatley I am unable to attend the concerts which is a shame. I have only seen them once, on the Signals tour, and they were superb.

As to favourite albums I find that with Rush I go through phases. The last album receiving regular play on the turntable was "Farewell to Kings".

Having said that when I want to turn the volume up I often have a blast of "Red Barchetta".

Damn, does this mean I have to alter my identity in future.

Hi , i am going to see them at the Glasgow SECC next tuesday, better dig out the ear plugs now to preserve whats left of my hearing.

I am not a die hard fan but like many love Moving Pictures. I had old isobariks for a month and the production seemed to gell with the way the Briks worked in my room, sounded awsome, pity no other albums sounded that way.
My Keltiks do not have the same snap or crack to drums (lack of drive me thinks)

I've got tickets to see them at the NEC on the 15th!

Going with my brother. Surprisingly, my wife wasn't interested after last time when she kindly came with me to Metallica at Earls Court last Christmas when my brother had to drop out

Since I saw them at the SECC on the tour supporting Roll The Bones, I know that that ain't so! I'll be over in Glasgow next Tuesday to pick them up there.

The sleeve notes to the "Show of Hands" release mainly recorded on the '88 tour at Birmingham (and I was there) has Neil Peart saying everything just worked perfectly, while at the RtB gig Geddy was apologising for the gremlins, but I thought the RtB gig much better.

Over the years they've loosened up where that's a good thing, while still being a very tight band where being tight matters. Vapor Trails didn't do much for me, but I quite like the newish EP of old favourites ("Feedback") they put out: fun stuff!

Pete.

I'm a Rush 70's man I'm afraid and nothing after Moving Pictures does it for me. (though I've only got Signals and Presto).
Big fan of A Farewell to Kings, closely followed by Moving Pictures, 2112 and Rush, then Hemispeheres and Permanent Waves. Fly by Night and Caress of Steel are the weekest of their 70's efforts.
Posted on: 07 September 2004 by Brucie
I'm with Greeny mostly here. Their 70s stuff is great IMHO. I gave up on them after Grace Under Pressure. I gave Power Windows a listen but it sounded terrible. A horrible digital recording. Have never bothered with them after that.

Hemispheres is up there as a fav along with 2112 and Permanent Waves (another awful recording but the music is fab). Moving Pics is also v.good.

As ever, thanks for the responses:

Funnily enough I don't have that much Rush in my music collection! A few I do have/had:

Signals (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab gold CD version): My favourite Rush album and best sounding.

Chronicles (best of compilation on three vinyl records): good overview of their career up to about late 1980's. All the Rush most people will ever need.

Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures: two of my favourite Rush albums that I am currently without! (Had to sell them both on cassette in the early 1990's recession).

2112 : Bonkers sci-fi concept album (also sold in early 1990's).

Caress Of Steel: As others here have said, a weaker effort. (My Fame label vinyl re-issue was...you guessed it, sold off in the early 1990's...)

Big Money 12" single: Digital recording or not I have memories of this sounding really big and good (these aural memories pre-date my first naim system though).

Wish I still had all the above now. Are there any good vinyl reissues that anyone can reccommend or must I go with the remastered CD's?

I thought their vinyl was pants - one of the few instances when the CD has actually been a welcome replacement. Don't know of there are any sooper dooper top quality LPs out there but the remastered CD sound fine so far - Power Windows (actually about twice as good as the ropey vinyl release) Signals and Moving Pictures. Three more on order.

Cheers

Hi All,

I'll be at the NEC on the 11th. I have all the albums (did I just admit to that?), for me Moving Pictures and Signals are favourites. Vinyl definitely sounds better than the digital remasters to my ears.
Hope all those goiing to see Rush enjoy as much as I will.

Hope everyone who went last night enjoyed the concert. Played lots of old stuff and relatively little new stuff. Sound quality in row 4 was mediocre but as long time Rush fans enjoyed every minute.

Not entirely sure what the tumble driers and vending machines were for, and why were they miked up?
