'The Prisoner'

is being re-run on BBC4 from this Friday.

Wonderful allegorical nonsense which was way ahead of its time.

And Portmeirion, where it was filmed is still enchanting.

Hi all,

Whilst filling up my car in Memphis I lifted the nozzle from the pump and waited for it to turn on. After a few seconds the little speaker above the pump crackled "Go ahead number six". I pushed the 'talk to attendent' button and much to the other customers' perplexion shouted "I am not a number, I am a free man!"

Definitley my favorite show of all time and it has the best beginning sequence and title music of all time too. Closely followed by 'Pee Wee's Playhouse'.

Best Reagrds,

If "The Prisoner" is not well known in the States, I wonder what on earth people made of that episode of The Simpsons.

Matt Groening is, apparently, a huge fan.

This was such a brilliant series ! I can't believe they got away with it !

Also my all time favorite.

BBC4 ? How many effing channels do you have now ?

The only thing I got frustrated about was the enigmatic ending, though they could'nt have preserved the underlying supposition of all pervasive control any other way.

"The only thing I got frustrated about was the enigmatic ending"

I thought they'd run out of money (or according to the reiview on Amazon of the DVD box set, it ran out of viewers). 17 episodes is not the usual run for a series...

On 'normal' telly, 5. On digital terrestrial 30 - 40 depending how you count them. On satellite - upwards of 200. As for watchable channels I'd say less than 10%.

More channels are now neccesary due to BBC1 being hijacked by soaps, and even ITV had Corrie on THREE TIMES IN ONE EVENING!!!!
So - the regular channels are full of shit, so we produce more channels for proper programmes. The Prisoner is a good example ( Wink).
I can't wait till they re-run UFO. Smile That was my absolute favorite

The ratings went down the toilet. Not surprising for a show so ahead of it's time in a peak slot, requiring more than passive audience reception. It was finished off quickly and didn't get the ending intended. Shame.

Cheers

'The Prisoner' is a brilliant show and to my mind nothing like it has been made before or since.

That bubble used to freak me out though....

Believe it or not, depsite having been to Port Meirion I'd never seen it and just happened to catch it the other day on BBC4...bloody brilliant if a little weird.
