Active with Proacs

Is it possible to go Naim active with Proac loudspeakers? Aside from having to remove or bypass the internal cross-overs, will naim's active units work with proac brand speakers (maybe the cross-over point can be adjusted) or are they voiced only for naim (and Linn, I guess).

I understand that Naim can make a crossover for just about any speaker, but it might not be cheap. That said, you would probably realized greater benefits by focussing investment elsewhere. I did not see your system listed, so if you would like lots of other opinions on what to do just edit your first post to include it.

I had ProAc R2.5s for about 3 years and really enjoyed them--great speaker at a lot of things, but definitely liked power--a 250 was about the minimum.

I also understand that the speakers for which a Naim XO is to be customised must have drivers designed to the attenuated at 18dB per octave. Any less (i.e. driver complement that overlaps significantly) you might get lowered output at the crossover points and other phase-type anomalies.

I had considered going active with my Sonus Fabers but in the end, decided that the added cost and redundancy of a custom snaxo, should I change speakers, was not worth the effort.

Hi Justin

You could try bi-amping your ProAc's. I have tried this out on the R1SC's.

To do this you will require a minimum naim setup of; preamp, power supply (flatcap/Hicap/Supercap), and two power amps.

Connect both power amps to the power supply and connect one to your high freq terminals and the other to your low freq. terminals.

This will continue to use the existing internal X/Over in the loudspeakers.

The effect on the R1SC's was amazing up to two NAP-180's, two NAP-250's was to much for it and NAP-135's could not be tried as there are only outputs on naim power supplies for three power amps.
