War of the Worlds

War of the WorldsWhy oh why do they have to modernise this classic.
I was eagerly anticipating seeing Martian Fighting Machines striding along the River Thames and through Victorian London until I got to the end of the article.
I just can't understand it.
What is it with American film makers these days. We have already had the 1950s George Pal version, ID4 and Signs. Why can't we have a Victorian War of the Worlds set in London, just the way the book is.
I can't say that I have ever been as aggravated about a film that hasn't yet been made.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's set in New York rather than London. You need to accept the fact that these films are made primarily for an American audience, and they are going to want to see familiar surroundings.
Also if you set things in the modern day it gives you the option of throwing jets, helecopters, tanks etc into the equation (special effect fest time!!).

Interesting. I got chatting to an English film producer a couple of weeks ago, who has been working on pre-production for a War of the Worlds film which was going to be based around the Jeff Wayne score.
There was talk of Anthony Hopkins narrating, even of Robbie Williams (sigh!) recording some of the tracks...I wonder if the Spielberg project means that his won't happen - or whether they're part of the same thing (seems unlikely)...
Anyone else heard any rumours about the musical remake?
Much of the Jeff Wayne score I can take or leave - although I do have a big soft spot for Forever Autumn.

Not to mention the fact it kicks off in Curch Square, Shepperton. Demolishes a fine pub, too.
