Perfume

Posted by: Fisbey on 05 May 2004

This woman where I work wears VERY odorous perfume, which I find 'very horrible' - and it seems worse now as I'm not smoking. The stuff she uses is about as subtle as a fart in a lift.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Be equally subtle - wear a gas mask.

Casually say to a colleague sitting close by "Can you smell insect repellent?"

That should do the trick.

It seems like your sense of smell has returned with a vengeance since you gave up the weed.

It could be you're currently a little over sensitive to smells that you probably didn't notice before.

I do agree though that overpowering perfume (or aftershave on men for that matter) can be as bad as cigarette smoke or B.O. Fragrances should be subtle not overbearing.

I am not sure about trying other pefumes since the lady may well like it and use it in excess quantities as well.

Have a can of aerosol air freshener on your desk - and use it when ever she walks past.

The aerosol must contain a non harmful gas of course or the greenies on the forum will rise up in rebellion <g>

Do not be subtle - just get even <g>

or raise the issue in the next office meeting explaining how the air-con is not keeping the air very fresh

I have an allergy/hypersensitivity to one perfume component (the "oriental" note), and this provokes an instant migraine. This often causes me problems at work, and can ruin a restaurant meal. Walking into a perfume shop is like being hit over the head with a baseball bat.
There are several campaining groups on the web about the perfume problem as it can cause real health problems. Unfortunately, none have come up with a solution.
