Welcome to Fortress Brighton

Posted by: oldie on 26 September 2004

Having just returned from a Sunday afternoon trip out of town I have had my car and passengers videoed several times each way, whilst both leaving and returning to the town, all the main roads into and out of the city have Police video van units working 24 hours a day recording all traffic passing by them.
Several roads have been closed to the general public and barricaded, the main sea front road has been restricted from in places 3 lanes each way down to 1 lane each way, with a massive steel barrier down the center. There are more police armed with machine guns[ that are not suitable or accurate enough to be used in a area crowded with people]on the roof tops and patroling the streets around the sea front area than you would expect to see in Beirut. Van loads of coppers are being driven all over the city and hundreds if not a thousand or more plods are crawling all over the place, this is not to mention the bl--dy helicopters over head and the alleged warships patroling the sea lanes just of the coast. And why do the people of Brighton have to put up with being made prisoners in there own City? so that Blair and his circus can perform their staged and totaly controlled ritual before the worlds press. So much for our democracy and rights of freedom, you can't even move around in our own town without being eyed with suspicion by several gun toting black clad moronic looking coppers.
RANT OVER
Sorry, oldie.

The GOOD and BAD NEWS to close this thread

The Good news
Brighton Councils Press Officer has just told me that the Home Office picks up the bill for the security of the conferance Big Grin, but he said he was not sure regarding who pays for the peripherals.

The Bad News
The CIRCUS is coming to town, again next year
359 days to go and counting Frown

Talk about Stage Managed
He also informed me ,that they had only had 2 complaints to their dedecated Conferance Complants line, when told that I had never heard of it he said it had been well publisized, when I pressed him for more information obout it said "that only those in the immdiate area had been informed about it, about 1000 residents in all".When reminded that aprox 250,000 people live in Brighton and all could have been inconvenienced by this fiasco the line went quite and only a slight throat clearing noise could be heard

As I suspected, you are a buffoon of the highest order. Only a complete cretin would say such a thing AND say it with such obvious pride. Typical, I suppose, of someone who was once a member of Mensa and has so little shame that he even feels thee need to boast about the fact in public.

Although your posts have a certain childlike naiviety that can be quite charming on occasion.

There's something in this. The forces of the world are out to get him (in a personal sense) and 'Blair' is more a kind of focal point for the paranoia than a real person.

But wasn't Matt Gibson, er, right in that film?

"But wasn't Matt Gibson, er, right in that film?"

Yes. That's what I said. And that's why I am taking Steven at his word despite him seeming to make absolutely no sense at all.

I would not disagree with that sentiment.

Having said that the IR are getting much tougher and taking a much closer look at the ultra wealthy. Fayed's arrangements anyone?

Those who deliberately evade taxation and falsify their records are just as bad as the spongers in my book.

Do bear in mind that a significant proportion of the ultra wealthy are highly mobile. If the tax system hits them too hard they leave the UK. What is better? 100 people paying 40% tax or 50 people paying 50% tax. You may not like it but that is the way of the world.

I will also add that Mr Brown has substantially increased the effective rate of taxation during his tenure in office.

A few random thoughts.

This is of the course that wonderful Thatcher/Reagan idea that the best way to motivate poor people is to take what little money they have off them. You can then give it to rich people via tax cuts as apparently to achieve the same motivating effect you have to give them more money.

So is it right, by way of example, that a teenage girl can go and deliberately fall pregnant so that she can be provided with accomodation and all the associated hand-outs?

What proportion of UK society belong to that group, do you think?

Andy.

Michael,

You are rather missing the point. The extra burden of tax put upon the likes of me and (I presume) you is not really caused by poor people fiddling the system. It's caused by the ultra wealthy basically telling the rest of us to bend over while they give us a right good seeing to.

I'm in need of junk food and beer Markus. If you go to Tescos before recieving Mekons intervention, can I trust you not to scoff the lot as you get a taxi from the suppermarket?

If a commuter can't find a way to get to work without polluting the local environment, I suggest they move nearer, or find a job elsewhere.

So the jobs will go elsewhere.

I.e: to another country.

Steve.

No probs, English junk food is too junk-like anyway. Now, if we were talking about Swiss chocolate ...

Edit: I was just looking at Tesco's website to see if they do deliveries. I would have asked Tesco to deliver to you on my behalf on Mekon's behalf. Turns out that yes, they do deliveries, but you have to be a UK resident to qualify for that service.

Mekon, is there anything else I can barter with you?

It is becoming clearer to me that all those of a leftist persuasion are budding little Stalinists.

IIRC, Stalin used to have people locked away in mental institutions just for the views they held, or even just for their religious beliefs.

I don't believe the forces are out to get me at all as I have nothing to hide, and the state must have much bigger fish to fry than little old me. I just object to such state snooping on principle. This is (or was) a free country.

Why can't it stay that way?

Why must socialism mean greater control, restriction and monitoring of individuals' movements?

Why is the environment being used as a pretext to push through legislation that will give megalamaniac socialists the total control they yearn for?

Most importantly, why is the bulk of the population of this country so apathetic about it and are prepared to just sit back, let it all happen and do nothing to stop it?

Road pricing = GPS satellite navigation technology = knowing the whereabouts of every vehicle in the land and how fast it is travelling. Simple logic really, no paranoia is required, just a lack of total trust in Mr B.Liar.

Steve.

I think Mr Toy is a well balanced individual.... he has a chip on each shoulder Smile

I think the point is Steven, that any responsible government very much would have it in for you.

Matthew
Posted on: 01 October 2004 by Steve Toy
Did I specifically say you were the pillock, AlexG?

Today's pillock award has to go to me. WRT the FTSE I'm back in 1987...

I take it then that apart from me, everyone thinks Mr Blair's road pricing scheme is just fine and dandy, and that we must do our unilateral bit to reduce global warming, even though it may completely screw up our economy, our liberty, and all the jobs (and pollution that go with them) will just go abroad.

Steve.

Thatcher used the philosophy that the idle sods who lounge about doing nothing or those who work in low paid jobs should be incentivised to get off their asses and earn extra money.

In the main it works but you will always have the waynes and waynettas to lumber the rest of us with.

This country needs workers not lazy yobs sitting around all day doing nothing.

Most wealthy people are work orientated who work long hours etc.

The really poor in this country are chavs who just spunge off the system.

Alex,

Did you ever imagine, two years ago when you first became a member of the Naim Forum, in your wildest dreams, that one day you'd be called a pillock by a Toy?
