Lightning and my Olive 250

Yesterday's thunder storm dramatically effected my life !!!
Not only was I soaked by the time a got home but my Hi-Fi was also suffering.
Everything was powered on during the storm and I'd muted the preamp the night before (as normal). But by the time I'd got home and dried off I realised that the little green Naim lights were on but there was no sound from the speakers, not even hiss.
I turned off the HiCaps and the 250, watched Eastenders and tried again after half an hour. Thankfully, everything was fine. I guess the 250 clipped from a surge during the storm and needed to reset itself but I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas / explanations

Count yourself lucky - although I am not technically minded about this time last year we experienced a nearby lightning strike at home. There was an electrical surge via the underground phone lines which knocked out the phones and (literally) blew out the alarm system's main circuit board.
Luckily the hifi and everything else running off the mains electricity was not affected.

hi guys,
a simple and cost effective way to protect your beloved kit is to replace your normal fuse at the cicuit board with a fuse which includes a trip switch within the fuse. these can be obtained easily at any good electrical supplier.
just make sure the fuse your using is on the ring main of your lights and not the fridge / freezer.
coz when it trips out with a surge, then so will your freezer and defrost your goods etc.
i put in an independant ring main just for the hi-fi and thats on a trip switch.
hope this helps, scotty

Not too sure what you mean -- do you mean really old fuses or contact breakers ???

Yes, here in north London on Tuesday evening when the heavens were flashing threateningly, I was pondering, "Shall I?"...."Shall I not?"....and after about five minutes, I decided to take no chances and switched off at the wall and pulled out all the plugs.

Thanks to all of you who replied, and in particular to Scotty who pointed out the problem of having a circuit breaker on the ring main that supplies the Hi-Fi and the fridge (as I do). This'll be changed in the near future as I'm having some work done in the kitchen soon.
Cheers
