Buying CD's in America

I've been led to believe this is a real can of worms?.....

Any advice?

My musical tastes vary incidentally.

No I'm probably going there in a week or two and want to bring some back - last time I went I brought back forty odd.

mmmmm things have changed since then, are there any limits to how many I bring back?

Are pressings any beter 'over there'?

As regards quality the concensus on these pages seems to be that US pressings are better than EU ones, but to be honest I've never done the comparison. Japanese are supposed to be the best if you're prepared to pay the premium.

Bang on; from the experience of myself and Hi-Fi friends. The difference in sound between some EU and USA made discs, has to be heard to be believed.

And yes, the ultimate superiority of Japanese made discs was proved again yesterday when a friend visited with a Japanese copy of the re-mastered first (eponymous) Eagles album.

For a thirty year old recording it is astonishing. Plate reverb and analogue delay devices are beautifully resolved with a clean open sound.

My favourite internet source is:-

Djangos of Portland, Oregon.

As stated elsewhere, safest to order one disc at at time (full price) to avoid import duty and VAT. It's generally cheaper than buying a full price disc in the UK, and it sounds better. Delivery time, if in stock is about a week.

Happy shopping.

Previously I have bought loads as they were much cheaper than over here, but the last couple of visits have seen that change a bit. I now buy from Play.com or CD-Wow, and I have a local shop that knocks out CD's for £6-7. Last time I was in the USA - last Autumn - I shopped around but decided it was generally cheaper back home. Even in supermarkets it seems that CD's were generally up to $14-15.

www.secondspin.com is also worth a look IMHO, I use them a fair bit and usually if I order 10 CDs they arrive within a week and average around £4 per CD with delivery.

Paul
