You Car or you Hi-Fi? Which cost you most??
Posted by: Paul R S on 10 August 2004
Just wondered whether many of you spend more on your hi-fi than on your car, presumed to be the second most expensive purchase?? Or does anyone drive a complete pile of shit to get a better sound indoors??? Do tell..

Well, I drive a company car, so no fair comparison. BUT, as I always thought I was spending crazy money on crazy materialistic stuff, a friend of mine buys photostuff which costs even more. A good lens is supposed to cost HiCap or more money. Now who's the crazy man?!

The HiFi was built up over many upgrades over many years so the total cost never hit me until I tried to get it insured, but the thought of to spending the same kind of money on a tin box on wheels would give me apoplexy.
As I get older the less I spend on the car the latest one has less value than my Cd collection,I must be going wrong somewhere!
So at the moment Hi Fi - Cd's -then a long way down the list - Car
oldie.

My HiFi exceeds the cost of my car by a ratio of about 18to1. I really must get myself a better amp.

I paid £1500 for my car 4 years ago. I've since spent about £500 on maintenance of the vehicle - a 1994 Ford Mondeo TD LX. It has more than 250,000 miles on the clock but it loses no oil or water, does in excess of 50 mpg on a run and will cruise happily on a motorway at over a ton where permitted (I've travelled across Germany in said old banger)
I've spent about 8k on my existing hi-fi gear and about 2k on CDs in the past 5 years.
Regards,
Steve.

You had to ask?
I've no idea the numbers or the ratio - my 1989 Nissan Sentra would be lucky to make £750 on a good day, despite being well maintained and with only 102,000 km on the clock. Next stop - W124 Mercedes as excellent value for money engineering. I would not trade the CDS3 for *any* car.

Car cost more than HiFi.
HiFi + CDs + Vinyl cost more than the car.
I wouldn't drive a lousy car to subsidise the Hi Fi, I drive too many miles to get away with a buzz box.
Cheers

Music > hifi > bike
Even if I could drive, I'd not spend much money on a car. They depreciate so fast, it's too much of a waste of time and money.
I'd probably buy an old clunker like a 15 year old VW Polo or Volvo estate, and do it up slowly, maybe.
My bike cost less than my turntable, and the turntable isn't exactly expensive

I'm fortunate enough to have the HiFi of my dreams (more or less) and two cars, both chosen for their "fun to drive ratio" (I don't need a car). The cars together cost more than the HiFi. So what?
Remember, when HiFi started in the 1950:s ANY system costed as much as a new car.

Oh dear!
My other (professional) passion comes into play:
House
Wine (!)
Music
Hi-Fi = Car
(but the car is much more secondhand)
At least some of the wine is going UP in value!

'fess up time..
When we sold up to move to Spain, I went out to spend £500 or so on a new CD player, but I made the mistake of going to a Naim dealer.
I crept out with a hi fi that cost a lot more than the new car, though the wife has yet to realise...
However, the 2000 Cd's and 1000 Lp's must have cost a load more than both together...
Hi Fi is now CDx XPS 52 Supercap 250 and Kans - B and W 804's too much for my room, and 20 yr old Kans rock my boat
Best money ever spent in my mind

My cars worth bugger all since a tree fell on it - phew even my portable's worth more than my car!

don't have a car so yep my Hi-Fi is worth more than it. If I didn't have this Hi-Fi addiction I may well have bought a car instead.

Hi-fi no question. Car is a J reg VW Passat which is so reliable it's almost immortal but probably not worth anything over a grand. Hi-fi is LP12, CDX2, 72/hi/180 and Dyn 52s.
Money spent on Records/Cds however completely dwarf expenditure on cars and hifi put together.
There seems to be a pattern emerging here.

Like most here, the hi-fi cost more than the car, though both were bought second-hand and both seem, through my rose-tinted specs, like good bargains to me.
Car's an '89 Mercedes - £2,500.
Hi-fi (main bits anyway) made up of PT Too, G707, Music Maker II, CDX, 72, Hi, 140, ES22s - came in somewhere around £3,700.
Poverty has stopped upgrade-itis affecting either car or hi-fi, though each costs me something like £2,000 a year to 'run'...the hi-fi loves music like the car loves petrol...

The wife ordered a new car yesterday. It is exactly the same model as her current one apart from having a cd player. The difference in price is £7k.I pointed out that Naim do better cd players for half the money and got a bollocking in return-strange creatures women;especially the ones we marry.Cheers Tony
