More votes for;

Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Elanor McEvoy,

and I'd add;

Carole King, Aimee Mann, Natalie Merchant (or 10,000 Maniacs)

and possibly Cowboy Junkies.

Regards,
Steve.

You could maybe try Kathryn Williams. And, if no one else has mentioned her already, Joni Mitchell.

Sia Furler, specifically the new 'Colour the Small one)(She sings with Zero 7 too)

Gramophone by Gramophone

Emilinia Torrini

Alanis Morrisette (look, I like her, OK?)

Gillian Welch?

Oh and Joni Mitchell

As a fan, I'd like to add Wendy Bucklew to this elite group. Her first album (linked) is a winner from beginning to end; highlights for me are "Big Box" and "Oh Well" (possibly the best breakup song ever). Her second release didn't do it for me, but it has its fans as well.

Oh, and Patty Griffin. Her albums are hit-or-miss with me, but "Living With Ghosts" hits dead on - the song "Let Him Fly" is brilliant. She can be a bit bombastic at times, though, in the same way as Rickie Lee Jones (who I also like a lot).

On edit, one further thought: Wendy Bucklew's first album is also amazingly well recorded, so there's an added bonus.

Wow that was an overwhelming response!! SmileI have a copy of Jonatha brooke-Plumb on it's way to me now.The only album I have heard by Joni Michell was Blue and i found this dated sounding (IMO) and this put me off. Is she still writing? Stephen H mentioned Aimee mann,I already have a lot of her albums and I think she is superb but the recording quality of some of her CD's is not great.

She is writing only in occasional spurts these days, and no album of new material in several years. In my view, her writing slacked off quite awhile ago anyway.

But this doesn't diminish the greatness of her early achievements. If Blue sounds too whole-wheat for you, try Hejira from 1976. Still sounds fresh and modern 30 years on.

Hicapman

Buy Joni Mitchell's Hejira and Night Ride Home.

Both absolutely superb albums. You may find the recording of Hejira "dated" but the quality of the music far outweighs the limitations of the time. NRH is a more modern recording but again, superb music.

Did Fred Simon mention Joni Mitchell ?

See, there you go, l-t-d, directly contradicting me the very minute I post. Big Grin

But I still say Hejira sounds fresh.

Hicapman, if you dig Jonatha's Plumb, you will most likely dig her Ten Cent Wings and The Angel in the House (the latter released under the group name The Story).

Digging those, you'll probably want Shawn Colvin's Steady On, A Few Small Repairs, and Whole New You.

Of Shawn Colvin early work, I much prefer “A Live One” over “Steady On” from which most of the tracks come but agree about “A few Small Repairs” and “A Whole New You”

You might like to try “Going Driftless – An artists tribute to Greg Brown” which was released in 2002 and has 14 Canadian/US female singer song writers performing his songs, many of whom have been already mentioned.

You're referring to Live '88, right? Yeah, that one is brilliant, all the more so because Colvin is a world class musician, both on guitar and voice, and she can do it all by herself better than almost anyone else.

But I love Steady On just as much, both because it was the first I'd heard from her, and because of John Levanthal's hand in the music. As great as Shawn is, and she really is, Levanthal is a huge reason A Few Small Repairs and Whole New You are masterpieces.

I received Jonatha Brooke-Plumb yesterday and had a short listen last night, so far I am very impressed the stand out track for me so far is 'No better'.What's her most recent album?I think I shall try a later Joni Mitchell next.

Roll Eyes Sorry Fred

Never meant to contradict, our posts appeared on the site at the same time.

I find Hejira fresh, musical and superb to listen to (even better on vinyl Wink) and I also feel the same way about Blue. Taking Hicapman's feeling about Blue, I guessed he would feel the same about Hejira.

Hicapman - IMO Fred's recommendations have always been spot-on. My collection is better as a result.

Jonatha's most recent album is Back In the Circus and it's good. But after Plumb I'd go with Ten Cent Wings, and especially The Angel In the House first.
