Kev-W - Reading/New Order'89. It was my first gig, and he DJ'ed.

I remember calling the Peel Show 'cos a long-forgotten US indie band I wrote to asked me to try to put them in touch. When I called, the assistant put John on during a record. He was friendly and interested, and thanked me for ringing in.

I feel a bit numb, and want to say it isn't fair. I'm not ready not to have him around.

D'you remember the time when he played "Teenage Kicks", and then said, "you know, I like that so much, I'm going to play it again", and did so, probably much to the consternation of the R1 schedulers ... he was a voice that kept me sane in my 'teens.

Great loss I concede. Peel and Mike Raven were my listening of choice during my 60s youth and formed my taste for years but was it really necessary for the entire output of BBC R5 to be given over to Peel from the announcement of his death until the football started?
Spectator type rant now finished.

Oh my, what a loss.

The session version of Love Will Tear Us Apart (the best version...) is playing now on the Sessions programme tribute.

I'm lucky enough to have some of his radio programmes recorded on tape. Sigh, they weren't meant to become posterity this soon.

Hope everyone has a tape somewhere...

No, it was '93 (that was the gig we all thought was going to be New Order's last) - it will forever be etched on my memory 'cause I cried, the Order were so brilliant. But they came back in '98 and were brilliant then as well.

I remember Reading '89, that's when Keith Allen (or someone) came on to announce the band but kept waffling on about someone callled "Geoff The Chef" who was languishing in jail. At the end Hooky decided to do a Hendrix and tried to set his bass on fire. They were good that year too.

To get back on Peel, did anyone witness the extraordinary sight of Gavin Esler trying to get Mark E Smith to talk about the great man on Newsnight last night?

I saw a tribute on bbc news last night with the finishing clip of John saying he would like a quote from teenage kicks on his headstone.

True devotion to a great song.

I was shattered to hear this news. I "grew" up with John. I didn't like too much of his music but his wit and words were always worth hearing. His family notes in the Radio Times were magical.
He will be missed, not least by up and comming bands. Who will fly their flag now?
