SBL on suspended wooden floor

Posted by: Martin C on 28 April 2004

Hi there,

My SBL are currently stand on the suspended wooden floor with TOUC spike discs. (similar to Fraim Chips, not cheap & made of special metal, but well, compare to Fraim chip? I think they are better, as they have the angle and there is pnly one point for the spike, not lkie the chips, which the spike can move around.)

I am think about to get 2 marbles and place the SBL on them.

I am sure some of you have done some experiments on that, what is the outcome?

One more point, what should I put underneath the marbles to keep them still and not scratching the wooden floor?

Cheers

Marbles? U mean slabs of marble as opposed to the marbles that kids play with?

I would have thought silly putty/blu tack is the stuff to use to secure things to wooden floors without damage...

Yes, of course the slabs of marble.

Martin

Get a couple of ordinary concrete slabs to try it. They are normally an excellent cheap solution at around £1 each.

I use a a pair under my Intro 2's on a suspended floor. Works well, and sounds a lot better that spiked into the wooden floor.

I guess big lumps of blu-tack will squash down and protect your floor.

I'm not a fan of slabs of anything under speakers.

Personally I'm enamoured with Philips head screws into wood then sit the speaker on them.
Sounds really good and is too cheap!

Just gotta get it round the goalkeeper/accountant/whatever you want to call her.

Just remember boys, IT'S YOUR FLOOR TOO!
Remember the Beastie Boys: you gotta FIGHT for your RIGHT to party!!

I thought Mana SB1's were the best solution for this situation? I've never used them but I had that impression. Am I wrong?

I used Mana sb1's (still do) at my previous house to cure a reasonance problem re a suspended wooden floor.

I recently tried taking them out of the loop at my present house, which has a concrete floor, and put them straight back again.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the advices, I think i will get a few granite slabs (at least look better and no complain for the missus!).

Actually I have a pair od mana soundbases, don't like it, I think the bass was lighter than without them. The presentation is totally different. I reckon without them, the sound is more natural and open. So I put them for my intro as rear speakers, I need something to raise for a few inches anyway.

Will go to the tile shop this weekend. To try on the Fraims would be also a good idea.

Graham, did you just use the granite slabs just under the fraim to see the difference? Not mixed the effect under the speakers.

cheers

How about using felt protector pads under the granite slabs? This would also enable the whole setup to be slid around the floor to get the best speaker positioning whilst still being a rigid setup.
