"Stay" songs : Alien conspiracy ?

Posted by: Minky on 11 October 2004

I was running up my mountain today listening to Elliot Smith's "Figure 8" through my iPod and my embarrassing headphones and as I was listening to him (RIP) sing "don’t go home Angeline - stay with me" on the track "In the lost and found" it occurred to me that it's suspiciously amazing, the number of songs that in some way express the sentiment - "don't go" in the setting of a man saying to a woman "look here, it's late and it's cold outside and we seem to be getting on rather well and I'm feeling particularly warm and cuddly about you tonight, and it seems to me that you staying/not going would be the most natural way forward in our relationship at this juncture."

So I decided to start a collection of "stay songs". This is what I've got so far :

1) "Stay" - David Bowie (IMO the king of stay-songs)
2) "Stay" - Alison Krauss
3) "Stay" - U2
4) "Stay" - Madonna
5) "Stay" - Chuka Khan
6) "Stay" - Eva Cassidy
7) "Stay" - Lisa Loeb
8) "Stay" - Pink Floyd
9) "Stay" - Jackson Brown
10) "Stay" - Blue Nile
11) "Stay" - Oingo Boingo

Songs with "Stay" in the title :

1) "I want the night to stay" - Luther Vandross
2) "Stay for a while" - Angie Stone
3) "Should I stay" - Gabrielle
4) "Please stay" - Kyle Minogue
5) "Should I stay or should I go" - The Clash

I know there are more. I can feel them out there mocking me. HELP ?

Off the top of my head, "Stay With Me" by The Faces (Rod Stewart when he was cool and in a band that knew how to rock like feck), and Marvin Gaye's "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)".

From memory

Stay clean - Motörhead
Wishing you would stay - The Tea Party

A search with Kazaa gives you a lot more.

Entering "Stay" in AMG produced 68 tiltles, with 3000 + versions of those.
Includes "Stay Home " by Armageddon Dildos.
(I'm sure Nick will have "A Guide to...them " in a couple of minutes.) Winker Razz Big Grin

Doesn't an Armageddon make a very expensive and probably uncomfortable dildo?

The other side of the coin…

Nirvana advised us to “Stay away”, Sleater-Kinney wanted you to “Stay where you are”, and The Clash just couldn’t make their mind up, could they?

Although it doesn't have "Stay" in the title, the classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside" certainly fits the genre. (I'm partial to the Ray Charles/Betty Carter version.)

Who sang the "Stay" that included the words "You'd better hope and pray that you make it back to your own world..." ?

At least, I think that's what she said - I'd have to hear it on an LP12 to be sure.
