Shocking discovery

I think I’ve finally sussed how to prevent getting static shocks when getting out of the car. I’m sure many of you share the same problem, especially during warm dry weather. You stop, get out the car, touch the door and Zap! - you’re day is spoiled. (Well the next few seconds is spoiled anyway).

The solution is to simply keep touching the metalwork of the car while getting up out of the seat until you’re standing upright. Since doing this I have never felt any static shock.

Now for the nerdy bit:

My theory is that while driving along, the car (and you) become positively charged relative to the ground (due presumably to friction between the tyres and the road). You stop, get out the car and your own positive charge dissipates through your shoes to ground. So now there is a potential difference between you and the car. You touch the car and Zap!

So, by keeping contact with the car while you are getting out, you dissipate the positive charge both from yourself and the car at the same time, hence no potential difference, and no Zap.

Whether my theory is correct or not, it seems to work.

I hope this drivel proves useful to someone.

Drivel ....
Nope me too, I've found it far worse with certain shoes or boots!

I support the type of shoe and sock worn as to the cause of static, identification of the cause and the work around ie hold onto the car body while I get out, was made many years ago -

I was told by someone who is an engineer that you should place a Bounce (or some similar product) sheet, the sheet that is placed in the dryer with your clothes, in your pants pocket and you will not have any static electricity. I have never tried this before so I don’t know if it works, but it sounded good.

If you hang an anorak off of the rear bumper they earth the motor wonderfully, one gets about three days out of an Oxbridge student driving at a steady 70mph, Scots tend to wear out quicker, and LSE merchants (especially female) are the best, as the more body fat (mainly cranial) smooths the ride as well as "Hey Presto" de-electrifying the smartest of socks (even Pollards )

Has to do with the materials you are wearing and the materials in the car as you rub around in the seat.

The evil car manufacturers could take care of this for us but they don't care.

Carry a stainless steel Parker pen in your hand at all times. Make sure you touch all metal door handles etc with it before handling. Maintain a distant but focussed appearance and folk will assume you're either an eccentric intellectual or a bampot. Whatever the case your won't get those annoying wee jaggy feelings when touch a metal door handle.

Apart from the Spenserian "Scrabble-get-outs" (gu, ee, wa, etc.), I think "Bampot" is the best word to emanate from Scotland, and alone makes Chris Brookmyre's books worth reading.

Has the very slight shock when geting out of a car actually ever bothered anyone? It doesn't me. Try accidentally shredding the power cord on the lawnmower and discovering same as a result of, and whilst, wearing sandals. Ouch.

How can bampots buy new car equipment, it's like updating dodgy MS Progs, innit ?

I dunno, I kind of like the shock.

I only sometimes get this from cars, but does anyone else get this by going to grab the handrail on an escalator?

The "up" one in Bentalls in Bracknell is the worst offender I ever came across - got zapped by that every time I used it!
