How do I get rid of a toolbar?

Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 12 July 2004

Yet another computer question... somehow, I have a new toolbar - Fizzlewiz / Fizzlebar. It is a real pain, with data scrolling across the top of the page really slowing down refresh rates. It also seems constantly to let in pop ups. I have no idea how this came to be (I suspect one of the brood. )

How can I get rid of the bloody thing?

try right clicking on the toolbar and if the name of the new toolbar is shown there with an tick against it just click on it and it should dissapear. If it is not there then try selecting from the drop down menus

View->Toolbars->Customize...

This will open a new window. Search for the new buttons in the list on the right, if they are there then select them and click on 'remove'.

If neither of these work then I've no idea. The other option is to ditch IE and go for another browser. Mozilla Firefox has a growing following and can be downloaded here. It is easy to install, pretty small to download (<5MB) and it is also easy to download and try and if you don't like just delete it and it won't have any problems co-habiting with IE.

You could download Hijack This and give that a try.

Mike,
You could check whether it's something that's been legitimately installed and remove it if you don't want it. Use Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs for this.

Mike, many toolbars can be removed by Ad-aware, sometimes you need to run it few times, www.lavasoft.de If it hijacks your browser you can go to "tools" in the "internetoptions", click "security" and then "not safe sites" and there you can block bad sites. Hope this is clear, translated from swedish.

Mike,
Sounds like your pc is filling up with add / spyware, just like mine did!

Try getting hold of some 'spyware' removal programs.... a quick search in google throws up plenty with free downloadable checkups...

Problem is they seem to find lots and lots of stuff that shouldnt be there, and then offer to fix it for a price....

I went out and bought something called 'spysweeper' by webroot.. (it was all that was available in store at the time) It is actually frightening exactly what you are not aware of happening all the time within your pc!!

This and most other spyware stuff will stop any other toolbars / tracking cookies / trojans from messing with the pc... till hackers find somethng else!
