Where can I get Aro cable? Calling Tony Lonorgan !

Posted by: Martin M on 07 December 2000

I wish to buy a phono-DIN interconnect and want to use ARO cable - Jawed's suggestion - he has a similar system to mine so I'll take his word. Does anyone know a Naim dealer with a reel of this stuff? Thanks.

I would try phoning a few up - I have to admit that I got mine from Jawed's local dealer (Studio 99), though they have recently gone down the pan. How a dealer can go under with Jawed as a customer is totally beyond me...

Oi Frank, can you get him some?

Tony.

...just a thought? There seems to be a demand (at least within this and t'other forum), and I suppose if it were sold in unterminated lengths it could be very reasonably priced?

John (still waiting for Hooch to sort me out with a 1.5m length for my LP12 )

...just in case anyone wanted to misinterpret that last line

Illusive stuff!

Tony, Jawed said you were into Varese, Steve Reich etc. Have you tried this on Jawed's system? I'll be onto DBLs soon, I'm wondering if I should invest in a Kevlar jacket before putting Reich & Verese on.

Perhaps you could e-mail me with any suggested CDs?

Perhaps Studio 99 were sunk by having to stock up on Cd-12s, Klimaxes and Nap 500s! I better get my DBLs ordered before my dealer pegs it too, I noticed a 500, NBLs, a Cd-12 and two Klimaxes in their last time, that's a lot of selling systems per item of dem stock...

I have heard some Stockhausen, Subbotnick and Varese on his system, but only the stuff off the excellent 'Ohm - a history of pioneering electronic music' compilation he owns. DBLs are great at this kind of stuff, I am sure you will enjoy them a lot. I have the CBS Sony Boulez Varese box set which is just brilliant.

Do you know much about John Cage? I'm looking for some recommendations…

Tony.

Well, if you like Verese etc you'll like Cage. The easy way in is through a Naxos CD of his (I've forgotton the title). It'll cost you £5, is well recorded, well played and is a interesting and challenging CD. BTW HMV are selling John Adam's Earbox boxset for £65 (instead of £90, and a Steve Reich box for £55 instead of £80. Both are worth the cash, the Reich in partcular is excellent. Both will give your system a hell of work-out.

Have you tried the "Yellow Shark" by Frank Zappa, performed by Ensemble Moderne? (IIRC); also, "The Perfect Stranger", conducted by Boulez of Zappa's work?

On the subject of John Cage, the obvious suggestion would be 4'32

(of course, this sounds great on most any hifi )

John

A fantastic album. The Boulex plays Zappa one is pretty good too. Zappa, the best moustache in music!

Wasn't 4'32" Frank's contribution to a John Cage celebration album a few years back?

Verese - the Complete Works boxset on Decca is a fabulous purchase - again cheap in HMV sale - £24. Buy it!

Anyway, where's my cable?

BTW Are the WBT phono plugs worth the cash?

I had the opportunity to attend a Life performance from the Ensemble Modern in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall last year, performing "The Yellow Shark". It was as good as the CD is. That means in reverse: the CD is fabulous.

Only drawback of the life performance was that they shuffled the "track numbers" and brought the "imigration protocol" (welcome to the United States...) only after standing ovations. It was real fun to see how they made the strange sounds, then.

If you are searching for modern classical avantgarde vinyl, you can find them in our Munich s/h vinyl shops (we have as many as London has), the Varese/Penderecki/Xenakis/Cage and so on other weird stuff, but expect to pay 15USD/10UKP for whatever you find interesting.

As I listen before buy, I can tell, that most is so weird, that I refused to buy. Nethertheless I now have 50 or more LPs with modern music.

regards,
Hartmut from Munich
