BT Master Sockets and ADSL

Posted by: Top Cat on 30 September 2004

Hi folks.

We've got a problem with our BT phone line, and it's getting replaced in a week's time (the old wires are 40-odd years old and have become brittle - a wire relocation recently has resulted in a lack of ringing, though the lines otherwise work fine - e.g. for broadband).

Anyway, I've already posed this question at BT, but got lost in their IVR and couldn't find anyone who could help.

My question is about the master phone socket, which I'm guessing will also be renewed.

Four years ago, in my previous home, I was a fairly early ADSL adopter, and as a result my master socket was replaced with an 'ADSL master socket' which worked well, and there was no need for the ADSL splitter/filters, which seem to be in use today.

Obviously these adaptors are clunky and unsightly, and I'm curious as to whether the ADSL master socket remains an option for post-ADSL installations. This would be neater and probably a better solution than a proliferation of filters.

Assuming that BT simply add a conventional master socket rather than one of these ADSL-capable sockets, does anyone know whether these ADSL-style sockets are available to purchase, how much they cost and how they differ in wiring terms from a conventional master socket?

I'm quite handy with phone/master socket wiring now, having had to learn through necessity, but that's a recent thing and I never had a chance to view the internals of the previous house's ADSL master socket.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks,

John

Update: I think I've found what I'm looking for which is a replacement consumer plate for an existing master socket in which there is an ADSL filter and dual terminals to allow both filtered and unfiltered use. I'm not sure this is exactly what I'm after but it could be...

I think BT changed to the plug-in filter/adaptor because so many ADSL installations are now sold as self-install jobs not requiring BT engineer intervention.

Also I believe they recommend that any extension sockets sharing the ADSL capable line also need to have filters fitted. I guess its easier and cheaper to do this with plug-in ones.

ADSL and Broadband are /were different products initially. There where a plethora of master/slave combinations and some of those were for telephony/ADSL BB as well Roll Eyes
You can get micro filters now that look like a plug in double socket converter. 1 for phone 1 for BB modem.

I had repair work done by BT, and they swapped my ADSL master socket for a new one.

So they still use and fit them.
