Soul J***: Studio One & ---% Dynamite overlap

Posted by: ErikL on 18 June 2004

Has anyone said "I own one of these series' but I wonder how much it overlaps with the other"? I did, and spent a few minutes dicking with Excel to see. The results:

"Drum Song" - by Sound Dimension on 100%; by Devon Russell on Roots

"Greedy G" - by Brentford All-Stars on 100% and Rockers

"No, No, No" - by KC White on 200%; by Dawn Penn on Rockers

Surprisingly, that's it! Note that I left out Studio One "Scorcher" (instrumentals) and "Soul" (soul covers) as neither suit my tastes.

Which version of "no,no,no" is better you reckon?

Mike,

Dunno, as I only own the % Dynamite series. I compared tracks because I'm considering a Soul Jazz order (of Studio One stuff).

That said, I have no complaints about the version of "No, No, No" I have.

You?

I'm just guessing here, I think KC White's version is the one everyone knows, but Dawn Penn's is the original.

Hmm I reckon Penn's is grittier and more honest, but I prefer White's for blasting out "11 on the dial".

One of my favorite songs, ever.

All my Soul Jazz stuff is properly paid for, BTW Smile
